aplastar ( ah-plah-stahr' )

verb ( to crush, to flatten, to smash )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Hay que aplastar la masa para el pan con el rodillo.

You have to flatten the dough for the bread with the rolling pin.

2. ¡Ay! ¡Una araña! ¡Aplástala rápido!

Oh! A spider! Smash it, quick!

I think that this is a forum to help people to learn english or spanish. If you used that kind of sentences the people could learn in the wrong way. - txustaboy, Nov 11, 2014
And why is that, txustaboy? - rac1, Nov 11, 2014
@txustaboy : don't worry amigo, JC is a nice and humble person, I am sure he doesn't mean any one any offense, it just seems to be in the sense of humor ,, relax :) - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 11, 2014
@txustaboy:The study of language includes slang and idiomatic phrases as well as standard usage. Anyone who has taught languages will tell you this. There is nothing offensive about this expression at least in the Americas. - 005faa61, Nov 12, 2014
If this is offensive in Spain, you should simply say so rather than making ridiculous comments - 005faa61, Nov 12, 2014

Oí un ruido detrás del carro y cuando miré vi que mi bicicleta se me aplastó.

I heard a noise behind the car and when I looked I saw that my bicycle was smashed.

Public service announcement (seriously): Please always make sure that there is nothing behind your car when you back up. Although I have never had a tragedy in my life related to this there are many who have. Be safe. Be aware.

Después de años durante los que algunos de los invitados aplastaban las latas de aluminio cada vez que tuve una fiesta en mi casa y me quejaban de esto a ellos, por fin he hecho que entiendan que no puedo reciclarlas en las malditas máquinas si están aplastadas.

After years during which some of the guests would crush the aluminum cans every time I had a party at my house, and I would complain about this to them, finally I have made them understand that I cannot recycle them in the blasted machines if they are crushed.

That seems rather tedious. I take them to the recycling place and they pay me 65 cents per pound :-)! - Jraider, Nov 10, 2014
I can't figue out why I can't just put them in my curbside recycling, instead I have to drive all the way to the store, fight with the machine, etc. Mostly we just donate them to whatever high school program (band, etc.) comes around asking for them. - bosquederoble, Nov 10, 2014

¿Cómo fácil o difícil es aplastar las bellotas? ¿Es natural cuando se caen de los árboles? ¿Podría ser la edad o bellotas podridas, o tal vez los animales aplastarlos en sus dientes o entre sus patas?

How easy or difficult is it to smash acorns? Is it natural when they fall from trees? Could it be old age or rotten acorns, or maybe the animals crush them in their teeth or between their paws?
