rama ( rah'-mah )

noun ( branch, limb )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Durante la tormenta una rama del árbol se partió y cayó sobre el techo de la casa.

During the storm, one of the tree's branches broke and fell on top of the roof of the house.

2. Esta rama de la empresa se encarga de desarrollar nuevos productos.

This branch of the company is responsible for developing new products.

Yes ian. Unfortunately we had a tree that died, and when we cut the branches down, you did not want to be under one of them when they fell. - Jraider, Nov 9, 2014
From wikipedia: Widow-maker is a nickname used to describe a highly stenotic left main coronary artery or proximal left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery of the heart. - bandit51jd, Nov 9, 2014

Circulating ??? (doesn't seem correct to me :( - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 9, 2014
It's not common in this particular construction, but it's not wrong either. - rac1, Nov 9, 2014
The squirrels are skittering/capering over/along the branches - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 9, 2014
@Rac1 : It is not grammatically incorrect but no one talks like this in my opinion (sounds eccentric), and I have never seen the verb "circulate" used with living beings - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 9, 2014
Yes, Joydeep:The commuters circulate a lot.. Poor things. it is unusual but ok. Jumping about would be more usual, but why not circulate with your friends in the tree tops? - annierats, Nov 9, 2014
Yes commuters do and traffic does too (in the context of traffic it is used but not otherwise) ... and the reason why is that we shouldn't sound like a geek while talking ,, just my humble opinion .. :) - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 9, 2014
In spanish .. may be we can say ... las ardillas retozan por las ramas ... but I am not too sure about spanish .. l:( - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 9, 2014
One more comment. I would say "running around" rather than "circulating" although I find the use of that word acceptable and almost poetic (perhaps "cicumabulating" would be the most verbose). - Jubilado, Nov 9, 2014
Sir, I think you meant "circumambulate" - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 9, 2014
The circumlocutory squirrel circumambulating around circumspectly .. hahaha - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 9, 2014
Correction: circumambulate (the keyboard is willing but the fingers are weak!) - Jubilado, Nov 9, 2014
As long as they are not discombobulating - all is well :) - ian-hill, Nov 9, 2014
Thanks Ian - porcupine7, Nov 10, 2014

Sloths descend from the security of their branches to the ground once every week, and doing so is very dangerous and burns a considerable amount of energy for an animal that is so torpid- because of this biologists have tried to find out why the sloths do this. The current theory is that it has something to do with a complex symbiotic relationship between the sloths, the moths that live in their fur and procreate in their feces and the green algae that grows in the fur, from which the sloths obtain necessary nutrients.

(¡uf! Sonrisa)

When I saw the word “rama” I was thinking about the phrase “Palm Sunday”, but as you can see it is another word “ramo”, therefore I thought “What’s the difference between the two words?" I looked in the dictionary and discovered that “rama” means 1) each one of the parts of a plant that sprouts from the trunk or main stalk and on which, generally, leaves, flowers and fruit bud. 2) Each of the areas into which a science or discipling are divided (there are other definitions - basically it’s “branch” in English); and “ramo” means 1) A bunch of flowers, plants and branches. 2) A secondary branch. 3) A branch cut from a tree. But the important thing for me is that neither “rama” nor “ramo” means “palm”. (whew! Grin)
