As described by James, pelao is slang for pelado. It could be a nickname.
Sometimes is used as a derogatory name: "¿Quién se cree el pelao ese que es'" Who does this guy (or you can use your own adjective) think he is?
In Puerto Rico we say: "estoy pelao". "I'm broke."

I would agree with this one. My Mother-in-Law pronounces words this way a lot...

Cannot find "Pelao" - Pelear is to fight so "Peleo" would be - I fight, I do fight, I am fighting. Don't know if this helps.
