ejército ( eh-hehr'-see-toh )

noun ( army )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Correction...It was actually the Russian army, not the Soviet Union at the time. - rac1, Nov 6, 2014
Hola mods . - ray76, Nov 6, 2014
Hola Ray. :):) - rac1, Nov 6, 2014
Correction... It was actually the Soviet Union army, not the Russian at the time :) The Battle of Stalingrad took place between August 23, 1942 and February 2, 1943. The Soviet Union existed between 1922 and 1991. - 0083706e, Nov 7, 2014
Well, thank you, Al. I was given incorrect information on that. Appreciate your clearing that up for us. :) - rac1, Nov 7, 2014

Muchos niños sueñan con alistarse en el ejército porque quieren dejar sus casas y a sus mamas, pero la realidad es que en el ejército hay que hacer ejercisio a cualquier hora de día o noche, hay que mantenerse en superbuena forma y sobrevivir por una dieta muy pobre y poco saludable, y todo eso para tener trabajo matando a otra gente.

Many young boys dream of enlisting in the army because they want to leave home and leave their mummies, but in reality life in the army consist of doing exercises at any hour of day or night and keeping in tip-top shape whilst surviving on a very poor and unhealthy diet. And all this in order to work, killing other people.

Mi padre sirvió en el ejército de los Estados Unidos por más de cincuenta años, y poseyó cada rango del ejército, incluir Chief Warrant Officer y General.

My father served in the U.S. Army for more than fifty years, and held every possible rank, including Chief Warrant Officer and General.

(The top picture below shows him at Fort Ritchie, Maryland, on what may have been our front porch. The other was probably for a newspaper or Army newsletter. It says on the back "The Three who Run Fort Ritchie." That's Dad on the right. Maybe someone can help translate Chief Warrant Officer into Spanish?)

Apparently in the 1980's the Swiss army shelled Liechtenstein, and in 2007 a Swiss army unit invaded the country- but in both cases it was accidental. : D - bosquederoble, Nov 6, 2014
Interesting reading about this country. :) - rac1, Nov 6, 2014
Buena info bosque. Gracias :-)! - Jraider, Nov 6, 2014

Cuando mi hermana tenía dieciocho años, mi madre la obligó a alistarse en el ejército, para separarla de su novio, quien había alistarse en la armada, y para causar que ella saliera de casa. Pero se mandaron los dos a bases cercanas la una a la otra, y mi hermana se fugó con su novio, quedó embarazada, y dejó el ejército.

When my sister was eighteen, my mother forced her to enlist in the army, in order to separate her from her boyfriend, who had enlisted in the navy, and to get her out of the house. But they sent them to bases that were near each other, and my sister eloped with her boyfriend, ended up pregnant, and left the army.

(This is not really my sister)

Yes, despite my mother, who has never stopped trying to separate them. - bosquederoble, Nov 6, 2014
That has to be slightly over 30 years of marriage at this point. - bosquederoble, Nov 6, 2014
Anyway, their oldest daughter has her MD, is finishing up her pediatric residency, and considering doing a pediatric oncology fellowship. ;) - bosquederoble, Nov 6, 2014

My father-in-law volunteered for the army during World War ii. He was rejected because of poor eyesight. Two weeks later he was drafted.

Mi suegro se ofreció como voluntario para el ejército durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Él fue rechazado a causa de problemas de visión. Dos semanas más tarde fue reclutado.

Traté de entrar en el ejército una vez pero me han rechazado. Supongo que era débil. Sin embargo, he tenido una carrera exitosa.

I tried to get into the army once but they rejected me. I guess I was weak. However, I have had a successful career.

Hombres jovenes se alistan en el ejército, pensando que va a estar una grande aventura. Desafortunademente, si hay una guerra, algunos de ellos serán asesinados, heridos o traumatizados. Los pobres soldados no tienen voz en la decisión de ir a la guerra, sino que pagan el precio.
