celoso ( seh-loh'-soh )

adjective ( jealous )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Mi perro es extremadamente celoso. Odia que acaricie a otros perros.

My dog is extremely jealous. He hates when I pet other dogs.

2. Mi novia es tan celosa que no le gusta que hable con cualquier otra mujer, no importa la razón.

My girlfriend is so jealous that she hates whenever I talk to any other woman, regardless of the reason.

I have a question about the phonetic of celoso. I don´t understand that symbols so much but the start of the phonetic of the word is "seh": Is this a "s" sound?. It is not pronounced with S but with C - txustaboy, Nov 6, 2014
In English the "C" and the "S" can both sound the same. The "C" in the Spanish word, "celoso" has the soft "C" sound in English, which is S. - rac1, Nov 6, 2014
In Latin America we have lost the "ceceo" so that "C" before "E" or "I" has the sound of "S" - Daniela2041, Nov 7, 2014

The women detest a jealous man whom they do not love but they would consider themselves to be offended if the man whom they love was not jealous

Ella debe haber sido muy consciente de esto porque era una experta en el amor.

She must have been well aware of this because she was a real expert in love.

Solía hablar de otras mujeres con Jenny. Dejó de venir a verme. Estaba celosa? Creo que sí.

I used to talk about other women with Jenny. She stopped seeing me. Was she jealous? I think so.

Can you explain the meaning of the sentence? I don´t understand it XDD - txustaboy, Nov 6, 2014
tx...jealousy has been described as a green-eyed monster, because it is such a destrctive emotion. So when you are overcome with jealousy, you give in to the beast. - Jraider, Nov 6, 2014
typo.."destructive"...This sentence is kind of abstract :-)!! - Jraider, Nov 6, 2014

I looked for quotes using the word "jealous," and this is my favorite: "A boy makes his girlfriend jealous of other women. A real man makes other women jealous of his girlfriend."

Busqué citas usando que utilizaron la palabra "celoso," y esta es mi favorita: "Un niño hace que su novia sienta celosa de otras mujeres. Un caballero hace que otras mujeres sientan celosas de su novia."

(added"sienta" and "sientan" as suggested by tuxstaboy)

Llevo 36 años casada. Si mi marido o yo hubieramos sido celosos, nunca habríamos llegado a celebrar tantos años juntos.

I have been married for 36 years. If either my husband or I had been jealous we would never, ever have arrived at celebrating so may years of togetherness.

You have a good foundation and willingness to make it work. Congrats. :) - rac1, Nov 5, 2014
Annie, the sentence is almost perfect. I´d only change: "llevo 36 años casada" without "de". The verb tense is cool, because you used subjuntive form. This tense is the "preterito pluscuamperfecto" and you also could use "hubiesemos" because both are ok - txustaboy, Nov 6, 2014
Thanks , txustaboy! - annierats, Nov 6, 2014

Alguien una vez dijo " Si no eres un amante celoso, no has encontrado a la persona adecuada". Es esto verdad?

Somebody once said " If you are not a jealous lover , you have not met the right person". Is this true?.

Re: jealousy. . .It depends, I think on the context of the relationship. Like all language: there's meaning in the mind of the speaker & various other shades of meaning in the minds of listeners. I don't believe in petty jealousy, but concur w/ the quote. - Esteban_317, Nov 6, 2014

Se Dicen que la diferencia entre ser celoso y ser envidioso es que eres celoso de lo que tienes pero envidioso de lo que no tienes.

They say the difference between being jealous and being envious is that you are jealous of what you have but envious of what you do not have.

Es difícil encontrar la diferencia entre celoso y envidioso. Creo que Jubilado tiene razon. Sientes envidia de alguien que tiene cosas o de alguien que te gustaria tener. Estás celoso cuando tienes miedo de perder algo o a alguien que ya tienes.

It is hard to remember the difference between jealous and envious. I think that Jubilado is right. You are envious of another person who has things or a person which you would like to have. You are jealous when you are afraid that you could lose something or someone you already have.
