English Or Spanish
I don't understand why people just correct you when you want to spell how ever you want or how ever you want to ask your questions! Why do people do that?

If you want to "spell how ever you want", there are plenty of sites filled with people who don´t care how much their language is bastardized, but this is a site of language study. Why would anyone want to waste their time studying something that is inaccurate?
Your question is truly amazing.
I really don't understand why you would ask such a question. Isn't it obvious that we are a language learning site? This site is for learning Spanish and English. Our goal is to help those interested in learning a language and learning proper grammar. When someone posts something with mistakes in it, they will be corrected. Most people are happy about receiving corrections because they truly want to learn. Here is a copy of the rules for SpanishDict.
Hello Alida Alicia,
Welcome to the SpanishDict forum ![]()
You asked:
I don't understand why people just correct you when you want to spell how ever you want or how ever you want to ask your questions! Why do people do that?
Let me start by asking you two questions:
Do you think that good educational standards count for nothing these days or should people not offer corrections in case the recipient were to become offended?
If we were to allow people to write using terrible, grammar spelling and punctuation in either Spanish or English and never correct it, how would those people on this forum trying to learn how to speak or write the language properly ever know what good Spanish or English looks like?!
As Rac rightly say, this is an educational website where we encourage the best standards of written and spoken Spanish and English. What would you think of a native Spanish or English teacher if they never corrected you? Would they be doing their job properly?!
I take Spanish classes on Skype with a native teacher from Spain once a week and I am very grateful for her feedback and constructive criticism ...that is how I can learn to improve; but I trust her and know that she only wants the best for me! I therefore take-on-board' her comments and seek to learn from my mistakes without taking offence ...that is the mature way to learn! ![]()
The purpose of these corrections is simply to help people be aware of their mistakes, so that they can learn from them, and to maintain good standards ...it is not done, and should never be done, with the intention of making the person being corrected feel stupid or small! We all make mistakes here and even native speakers occasionally make mistakes, including typos (typing errors) so we are not here to point the finger at anyone else... we all have enough to do correcting our own faults!
So, please rest assured that our motives (the motives of the vast majority of people on this site ) for correcting you or anyone else here are simply to help you to improve your language skills and maintain good standards in both Spanish and English! In the unusual event that anyone were to leave any nasty comments under your post, please feel free to flag the comment and/or to PM (e-mail) an administrator/monitor eg Ian, Rac or one of the others) who will look into the matter with a view to resolving it as soon as they can!
By the way, if you still think, after my reading all our posts, that we are making too much fuss about nothng, you can text other people using the worst possible spelling, gramar and punctuation that you like or write bad Spanish or English on Facebook or other non-educational sites and few people will care or say (write) anything, but then they might not understand you either...it's a risk people take when they choose/prefer to use sub-standard language skills! Sub-standard you say?!! Try presenting text which has bad spelling, punctutation and grammar at any good university and see what results you obtain ...you will not pass the assignment; let alone the whole module!
I hope this helps ![]()
This does strike me as a rather odd and, frankly, obtuse (and perhaps deliberately provocative ?) question for a language learning site. That said, beyond this context, in general terms I would defend the right of individuals to use non-standard spelling and grammar in social media. I myself usually try to use standard spelling and grammar notwithstanding the medium (because I prefer to make myself understood), but if others wish to choose non-standard variants, then they should be free to do so.
I think there are at least two conflicting dialectics at play here. On one hand, language does evolve and should be allowed to evolve (the pedant who slavishly corrects teenagers for using u instead of you fails to grasp this; at some point in the evolution of the English language, someone decided to stop using thou and to start using you instead (or dijieron became dijeron, to use a Spanish example)). On the other hand, absent some degree of control on this evolutionary process, it risks running away with itself and before long the language could become unrecognisable (or at least incomprehensible) when compared with itself only a few generations before.
Therefore a careful balancing act is in order.
Yet on a language learning site, yes standard varieties should apply and pedantry is king.
