The meaning is "The next" or "the next one" depending of the sentence.

Example 1:

Next saturday we will go to XXXX

El próximo sábado (nosotros) iremos a XXXX

Example 2:

Who is the next one?

¿Quien es el próximo/a?

"Next Saturday" omit "the" - jphip, Oct 28, 2014
I agree with you,, it is a typical spanish mistake :P Ty - txustaboy, Oct 28, 2014
How are you txust? Great examples! : ) - jphip, Oct 28, 2014
Fine :). I forgot to add the "following" meaning that is valid too. - txustaboy, Oct 28, 2014

well, it depends on the context, for example, "proximo (a)", without the article, is used in sentences like this: Mi cumpleaños está próximo a llegar (my birthday is coming)

"la próxima / el próximo" is more common and there is more examples like those:
¿Cuál es la próxima parada del bus? ( what is the next bus stop?) Ganaré el próximo concurso (I will win the next contest) La próxima vez lo haré mejor (Next time, I will do it better) El próximo partido será en dos horas (Next match will be in two hours)

Like you can see, most of the time, we need to use the article. smile

El Próximo La Próxima

It is used for soon, near, following, next.

I will give an example of the feminine and masculine usage.

El mes próximo = the following month/ next month

La próxima semana = the following week/ next week

Why is el and la used instead of just proximo/a? - guitarmaster, Oct 28, 2014
It is like that in Spanish and other romantic languages. Sometimes articles are used in a scenario in one language and not in the other. Like txustaboy used when translating to English. You will just have to get used to when and when not to use. - jphip, Oct 28, 2014
You will see an example to a recent post as well: Copy + Paste: http://www.spanishdict.com/answers/267828/hay-un-gato-encerrado- - jphip, Oct 28, 2014
When talking about articles (the: a) (el/la: un/una) - jphip, Oct 28, 2014

Hello Guitarmaster

Welcome to the SpanishDict forum; smile

You asked:

Próximo/próxima = (means) next

Which one you would use would depend on the context! wink

eg: El próximo jueves (masc) = Next thursday but La próxima semana (fem) = next week (also can be expressed as La semana que viene)

La próxima vez = next time

Próximo is masculine and próxima is feminine and these adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun/s they are qualifying/describing

The use of the article el or la just means the next/the next one

¿Quién es el próximo? / But ¿Quién es la próxima? = Who is next? (lit: Who is the next one?)

They cannot share the same aerticle wink

I hope this helps wink
