It sounds as if you are from the UK by the way you worded your sentence (I lived there for many years until two years ago). If you are searching for a way to translate this, let me suggest re-wording your second English sentence literally first. "Fell ill" is a very British colloquialism. You could try saying, he "became unwell." "To fall" would translate differently (even for us other English speakers).
