asustado ( ah-soos-tah'-doh )

adjective ( frightened, scared )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Mi perro está asustado porque hay tormenta.

My dog is scared because there's a storm.

2. Estoy asustada después de ver esa película de horror.

I'm frightened after seeing that horror movie.

Some people have irrational fears. For example, my mother-in-law, I have learned on this visit, is afraid of the number thirteen.

Me he asustado a veces pero he encontrado que no ayuda. Es mejor usar su mente para su ventaja.

I have been frightened sometimes but I have found that it does not help. It is better to use your mind to your advantage.

En la película todos los jovenes estuvieron asustados porque un tipo con una sierra de cadena (o "motor" en España - gracias Annie) los persuiguió a ellos.

In the film all the young people were scared because some guy (bloke, chap) with a chainsaw was chasing them.

For some reason men in general are amused by frightened women. I wish I could say I am not, but I've had my rolls in the gutter, too. - Jubilado, Oct 24, 2014
Your "rolls in the gutter" ? What does that mean? :) - Findy, Oct 24, 2014
Findy, it means that I too have done things I am ashamed of. - Jubilado, Oct 25, 2014
"reactions" lol - rac1, Oct 25, 2014

Siempre estoy un poco asustado cuando estoy en un lugar alto, pero no es una fobia, y por eso era capaz de pintar mis aleros, incluyendo los que están a 25 pies del suelo, aunque sólo tenía una escalera de 20 pies, y tuve que colocarla sobre una mesa para alcanzar esos aleros.

I am always a little afraid whenever I am in a high place, but it is not a phobia, and because of that I was able to paint my eaves, including those that are 25 feet off the ground, even though I only had a 20 foot ladder, and had to put it on top of a table to reach those eaves.

should you make the corresponding conversions in a translation? hehe I mean 20ft=~6mts & 25ft=~7,5mts :D - 003e54f5, Oct 24, 2014
I fell from a ladder just like this last year. Fortunately I only hit m head :-)! - Jraider, Oct 24, 2014
Pablo- we in the US should just abandon our archaic system and join the modern world. I think I would if I didn't have a sneaky suspicion that the metric system was invented by the French. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 24, 2014
Yes JR...you have a hard head. lol - rac1, Oct 24, 2014
An English bishop, John Wilkins, (1614-1672) essentially invented the metric system. Others refined it. Until today I thought the Ancient Greeks did. - Jubilado, Oct 24, 2014
Oh, well then I will have to start using it. Actually the truth is that I do use it at least as much as the English system (which the English no longer use). :) - bosquederoble, Oct 24, 2014
The metric system is so unromantic. :) - ian-hill, Oct 24, 2014
http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msp98/news/mco990930.html- bad things can happen from us not all using the same units. :( - bosquederoble, Oct 24, 2014
