frio ( free'-oh )

noun ( cold )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

En los tropicos,es común encontrar las naranjas verdes que están maduras. Esto es porque no han estado expuestos al frio. Para desarrolar su típico color naranja, las naranjas requiren varias noches frias consecutivas mientras están todavia en el árbol.

In the tropics,it is common to find green oranges that are ripe. This is because they have not been exposed to the cold. To develop their typical orange colour, oranges require several consecutive cold nights while they are still on the tree.

Mi esposa solía subir tanto la calefacción tanto cuando hacía frío que yo siempre tenía que llevar pantalones cortos con playera (camiseta), y siempre tenía ganas de quitarme la playera, pero, de repente, sucedió la menopausia, y hoy en día incluso tengo que llevar un suéter en la casa a veces.

My wife used to turn up the heat so much when it was cold that I always had to wear shorts with a tee-shirt, and always felt like taking off the t-shirt, but, suddenly, menopause happened, and nowadays I even have to wear a sweater in the house at times.

haha I remember that feeling! When I was going through "the change" I took a tropical vacation for about 3 minutes every 15 minutes for about two years! (Not fun.) Hmm. Never thought I'd ever post that in public! lol - Findy, Oct 22, 2014
...time changes everything. - osas-baby, Oct 22, 2014
Can't find that happy medium? - rac1, Oct 22, 2014
What happens during menopause??? I know what it means .. but what about the tropical vacation feeling ?? You girls have to go through so much of these natural issues and pains.. :( - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 22, 2014
To my understanding, menopause is like having your own personal heater, that you can't control, and that kicks in at random. Clearly it is a dysfunction of the body's thermoregulation system. - bosquederoble, Oct 22, 2014
I always love the term happy medium, it makes me think of a joy-filled psychic every time. :D - bosquederoble, Oct 22, 2014
Thermoregulatory system. :( - bosquederoble, Oct 22, 2014
Happy medium! lol! - Findy, Oct 22, 2014

I grew up in a snowy place (Ohio), then moved to California and missed the snow. Then on to Scotland, where we had loads of cold and snow. Now here in Vegas we are having "cool" weather - in the 80s! - Findy, Oct 22, 2014

Según el dibujante así parece el dicho que cualquiera es frío y calculador . Me gusta la idea.

The artist thus seems the saying that somebody is cold and calculating. I like the idea.

It's nice that you're so devoted to SD - studying while visiting relatives! :) - Findy, Oct 22, 2014
Estamos visitando parientes is good for me and yes, it's 'no hace ni un poco de frío' as Bosque said :D - 003e54f5, Oct 22, 2014
Maybe that is why she is visiting SD. lol - rac1, Oct 22, 2014
I have to admit I don't understand why "parientes " don't merit a personal "a"- they are real people. Interesting. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 23, 2014
I mean 'a los parientes' is well too and probably I'd use both so that breaks 'the rules' :) - 003e54f5, Oct 23, 2014

Me gustan el frío y la nieve especialmente cuando pueda puedo (a "cuando not followed by the subjunctive) verlos a través de la ventana cubierto con una frazada de abrigo.

I like cold and snow especially when I can view them through the window while covered with a warm blanket.

Yo prefiero el frio al calor, pero eso es porque aqui 'frio' significa cerca de doce grados, y 'calor' significa más de treinta y cinco grados. Por supuesto, utilizamos medición centigrados. No me gustaría vivir en un lugar en que la temperatura en el invierno está mucho bajo de cero.

I prefer the cold to the hot, but that is because here 'cold' means about twelve degrees, and 'hot' means more than thirty-five degrees. Of course, we use Centigrade measurements. I would not like to live in a place where the temperature in winter is way below zero.
