When to use "a" as for?

I've seen sentences in which the "a" is used as "for"

Hazlo a mi hermano. (Do it for my brother)

I know I've seen more in my textbook, but it's late and I don't feel like listing them all.

One example:

El año pasado le puse un altar a mi mascota. Hey I do love my pets.

not being a native speaker- it always seems to me that the "A" points at something or someone. As Rey Mysterio indicates- the altar is "a" mi mascota - pointing to the mascota. maybe a little simplistic, but works for me.
