herir ( eh-reer' )

verb ( to wound, to hurt )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Uno de los jugadores del otro equipo me dio una patada y me hirió el tobillo.

One of the other team's players gave me a kick and hurt my ankle.

2. Debes recordar que las palabras pueden herir profundamente.

You should remember that words can wound deeply.

Ten cuidado, puedes herir no solo con actos sino con tu indiferencia.

Be careful, you can hurt not only with acts but with your indifference.

"Frankly my dear I don't give a damn."

"That wounds me."

"I repeat, frankly my dear I don't give a damn."

"Francamente querida no me importa un carajo."

"Eso me hiere."

"Repito, francamente querida me importa un carajo."

El niño llegó a la escuela con moretones en los brazos, pero cuando investigaron a su familia descubrieron que le se estaba hiriendo a su mismo.

The child arrived at school with bruises on his arms, but when they investigated his family they discovered that he was hurting himself.

(I wanted to show the irregular present participle form)

Han cumplido realizado muchas investigaciones sobre la genética de los que disfrutan de situaciones en las que se arriesgan a herirse- me parece que ni mi esposa ni yo tenemos esos genes-ninguno de nosotros saltaría de un avión que funcione bien, ni de un acantilado ni de un puente incluso si tuviéramos una cuerda.

They have accomplished many studies regarding the genetics of those that enjoy situations in which they risk being injured- it seems to me that neither my wife nor I have those genes- neither of us would jump from an airplane that was working well, nor from a cliff or a bridge even if we had a rope.

Unas personas piensan que la arquitectura moderna de nuestra biblioteca hiere la vista, pero yo creo que es hermosa.

Some people think the modern architecture of our library is an eyesore, but I think it's beautiful.

Me hirió en lo más hondo que Elliott vendió el anillo de mi madre.

Correction per Pablo: Me hirió en lo más profundo que Elliott haya vendido el anillo de mi madre.

It hurt me deeply that Elliott sold my mother's ring.

'en lo más profundo(or 'hirió profundamente') and 'haya vendido' would be better in Spa but doesn't matter and I hope it isn't a true story (just kidding ;)) - 003e54f5, Oct 15, 2014
That's a shame. - rac1, Oct 15, 2014

The boy was riding his bicycle so fast that I shouted "Be careful, slow down!" but he ignored me and , within five minutes, he fell off and hurt himself badly.
