I used to be amazed at how McDondald’s were able to serve coffee of exactly the same awful quality in most of the countries of the world.

It has improved.

Hay muchas cosas que me han asombrado, pero hoy, para tratar de no ofender a nadie, voy a escoger una un poco esotérica. En los noventa, leí un libro en el que el autor, un físico muy famoso, dijo que creía que estábamos a punto de resolver todos los problemas de la mecánica cuántica. Aunque nadie puede explicar por qué el tiempo sigue sólo una dirección, ni combinar la relatividad y el espacio-tiempo con la mecánica cuántica, ni siquiera entender lo que la mecánica cuántica nos dice sobre la realidad. Esto me recordó las afirmaciones antes del descubrimiento de la mecánica cuántica a pesar de la radiación del cuerpo negro y otros problemas que existía. Y todavía me recuerda eso.

There are many things that have surprised me, but today, in order to try to not offend anyone, I am going to choose one that is a bit esoteric. In the nineties, I read a book in which the author, a very famous physicist, said that he thought that we were about to resolve all the problems of quantum mechanics. Even though no one can explain why time follows only one direction, nor combine relativity and space-time with quantum mechanics, nor even understand what quantum mechanics tells us about reality. It reminded me of the claims before the discovery of quantum mechanics in spite of black-body radiation and other problems that existed. And it still reminds me of this.
