marido ( mah-ree'-doh )

noun ( husband )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Mi marido y yo tenemos 30 años de casados.

Siempre digo a mi marido "¡Hombres más mayor que cincuenta no deben treparse a escaleras!", pero él sigue hacerlo.

I always say to my husband "Men over fifty should not climb up ladders!" but he continues to do it.

Cada vez que la mayor de sus hijas tiene un nuevo novio, mi esposa cree que sería un buen marido, y que ella debería casarse con él, y nos da darnos un nieto, pero hasta ahora nuestra hija ha rechazado el consejo de mi esposa, y hasta ahora yo creo que nuestra hija ha tenido la razón.

Every time the oldest of her daughters has a new boyfriend, my wife thinks that he would make a good husband, and that she should marry him, and give us a grandchild, but up until now our daughter has rejected my wife's advice, and up to now I think that our daughter has been right.

jimmy.. do you mean "wish that he was their husband." ? - Jraider, Oct 13, 2014
Leo, the charmer. :) - rac1, Oct 13, 2014
yes my friend JR ,, but the english subjunctive is needed here - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
like we say .. I hope God BE with you (not ,, that,,God is with you ) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
or we could use past subjunctive (if the intent is to present it as a contrary to fact statement) .. and wish that he WeRe their husband :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
You can't say that he ' be', you have to say ' wish he were/was their husband. Sorry about this correction, Leo. - annierats, Oct 13, 2014
Yes annie "was" or "were" :-)! - Jraider, Oct 13, 2014
Well ,, I respectfully disagree, to be grammatically correct, this clause needs a subjunctive .. were is correct but only in the case of contrary to fact statements but here that is not the case so present subjunctive is needed - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
I just googled up this article for you (regarding contrary to fact contexts) http://web.ku.edu/~edit/subjunctive.html - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
like spanish, english also employs subjunctive but most native speakers don't realize it because the difference (in the case of most verbs) is very subtle - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
for example : I know he doesn't smoke (indicative mood) ,,, on the other hand .... I wish he don't smoke (subjunctive mood) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
and here is the conjugation chart for the verb "to be" .. please look at the subjunctive conjugation .. which is exactly what needs to be used in my sentence as the main clause expresses a desire and the subordinate noun clause is a dependent clause - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
other examples : I wish (that) you be happy (not, you A R E happy) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
I desire (that) I be rich some day (not, I AM rich some day) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
my sentence is in subjunctive mood and regular indicative conjugation will render it grammatically incorrect ... - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
Now, having said that, I would also like to say here that not all countries have the same degree of the level of compliance to the rules of grammar ,, for example in US english I have observed many departures from the rules of grammar while speaking - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
(in the day to day native speech) but in my country, though the level of fluency is slightly lesser as opposed to countries like US and UK (because we have multiple languages to communicate so our expertise sort of gets divided hehe) but there is a - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
but there is a conscious effort in general to be as grammatically correct as possible.. so over here .. you won't see any one saying.. I hope God IS with you... they will use subjunctive "be" wherever the grammar calls for the use of subjunctive .. - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
Sorry for the lengthy tirade ,, just a friendly discourse on English Grammar from your paltry friend called Jimmy the dodo .. haha - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
And this is one reason why many (not all) english speakers get a real hard time getting a handle around the Spanish subjunctive as they are unaware of its usage (or its very existence) in their own language (I am saying this very respectfully, no offense - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
intended) hehe .. again .. whatever has been said above is purely with an intention of a friendly discussion among friends, No offense to anyone ... we are all friends and are just sharing our respective points of view .. hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
If anyone still has some doubts or disagrees then I urge him/her to please read this and hope you guys won't question Wikepedia .. hehe ,, just kidding - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014

I hope you guys BE in peace and BE happy and BE glad to BE jimmy's friend .. hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
Jimmy, take a look at the explanation and discussion at http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/145854/past-subjunctive-vs-present-subjunctive. I think you'll find it interesting. - AnnRon, Oct 13, 2014
I really don't want to prolong this discussion and I agree with you, Joydeep, on the English subjunctive. But there is a great linguistic barrier between the Spanish subjunctive and the English subjunctive. It has to do with the Latin root of Spanish. - Jubilado, Oct 13, 2014
English shares Latin vocabulary but not as a Romance language so no Latin root. - Jubilado, Oct 13, 2014
: ) - jphip, Oct 13, 2014
Wow! This is a super long thread! - jphip, Oct 13, 2014
hahaha ,, I am going to sleep.. goodnight frends .. love you all :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014
and before I go .. once again .. I wish you all BE blessed (correct grammar) ... I hope you all ARE blessed ( Grammatical Blunder ) .. :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 13, 2014

Algunas mujeres lo están haciendo mucho mejor sin maridos de lo que lo harían con ellos. Some women are doing much better without husbands than they would do with them.

Llevo 36 años de casada y durante todos estos años he compartido mi vida con el mismísimo marido. A veces creo que un cambio de marido de vez en cuando hubiera sido interesante.

I've been married for 36 years, and all this time I've shared my life with the very same husband. Sometimes I think that a change of husband, once in a while, would have been interesting.
