bañar (bah-nyahr')

verb ( to bathe; to soak )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

enter image description here

Examples:

1. El perro está hediondo. Hay que bañarlo.

The dog reeks. He has to be bathed.

2. De postre tuvimos una variedad de frutas bañadas en chocolate.

For dessert, we had a variety of fruits soaked in chocolate.

Notes:

It's common to see "bañar" in its reflexive form, "bañarse" ("to bathe oneself").

Cada quien baña a su niño donde puede . Solo podemos esperar a que no vaya a resfriarse.

Everyone bathes his child where he can . We can only hope that he does not catch cold.

Suggestion : Everyone who bathes his child wherever he can, we can only hope the he doesn't catch a cold :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
typo : that **(not "the") - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
"Everyone bathes his child"...I dont think "Everyone who bathes" is correct in this case. - osas-baby, Oct 8, 2014
Hi OB ,.. everyone bathes would mean"that ever body in the word bathes their children wherever they can without exercising any caution,, hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
I am sure that "rveryone doesn't come in that bracket" so "everyone WHO bathes" would refer to the selective bunch who bathe their kids in this fashion (as illustrated in the pic), ha - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
world** typo - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
or we can say "those who bathe their child/children wherever they can ... :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Just my humble opinion. rest Amber can check and confirm .. hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Agreed, but that was a separate sentence. Using the term "Everyone who" means you have to join both sentences to form one sentence. - osas-baby, Oct 8, 2014
To keep both sentences I would suggest "People bathe their children wherever they can".My opinion too...and thanks. - osas-baby, Oct 8, 2014
Thanks for the opinion OB and I agree that its better to join the sentence but unless you insert the relative pronoun "who" in there it would still mean that "every one does that to their kids haha" I sure won't even bathe my Leo like that .. haha - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Besides if you notice, both the sentence have different subjects and are mutually exclusive so aint that easy to join the sentences unless we change something .. but maybe Amber can suggest a better way ..hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
It's easy to bathe small children, except for all the splashing :-)!!! - Jraider, Oct 8, 2014
hmm - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Joydeep amigo - please be less verbose amigo :) - - ian-hill, Oct 8, 2014
It was a simple S missing in the original sentence - a typo - Everyone batheS his child where he can - ian-hill, Oct 8, 2014
Or as osas suggested - "People bathe their children wherever they can." is excellent. :) - ian-hill, Oct 8, 2014
Hola Porcu. :) Thanks Ian. xo - rac1, Oct 8, 2014
ok Amigo Ian, from this day forward I take a solemn oath that I would be less verbose, less garrulous, less circumlocutory and less loquacious .. hahaha :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014

Wolfie y yo nos bañamos juntos en el Atlántico cuando no hay desmasiada gente en la playa.

Wolfie and I swim together in the Atlantic, when there aren't too many people about on the beach.

( The Spanish don't seem to say swim, they seem to say bañar, but I may be wrong, it may be local usage)

"a bath in the river amiga" (bath :noun,, to bathe : verb) :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Amiga .. (Ella) "dio un baño a los caballos en el rio" or "(ella) bañó los caballos en el rio" - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Oops.....gracias amiga. - osas-baby, Oct 8, 2014
You are welcome (any time) amiga but kindly don't change my gender, I am happy being a man, don't have to spend money on cosmetics and other things,ha .. I am your old forgotten friend,Jimmy :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Hola mi hermana. Did you mean she"bathes" or "she bathed" ? - Jraider, Oct 8, 2014
Hermana, kindly put a "d" after bathe (to make it past tense) and you also might want to put an accent over the "o" in baño ,so it looks more like a verb conjugated in past tense(and not the noun baño) .. regards - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Hhhmmnnn.....ok gracias Hermanos....guess I have been away for too long, will take some getting used to.♡♥♡. - osas-baby, Oct 8, 2014
"She bathes the horses in the river" or "She bathed the horses in the river" Both are fine. - rac1, Oct 8, 2014
Yes Amb, but her original sentence was in past tense so we suggested "bathed" hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014

Es agradable para bañarse en manantiales de agua calientes naturales, si no te importa que huela oler a azufre.

It is pleasing to bathe in natural hot springs, if you don't mind smelling like sulfur.

I would say "Es agradable bañarse en fuente de agua termales (Hot springs),si no te importa oler a azufre :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Fuente means fountain though, right jimmy? - Jraider, Oct 8, 2014
Yes Amigo, but it also means "spring" .. here .. check out this link .. hehe http://www.spanishdict.com/translate/termal - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
and it can also mean the source or origin of something ... like .. el fuente de toda la ira (the source of all the anger) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
I mean la fuente (sorry for the typo) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Nice photo Hermano. - osas-baby, Oct 8, 2014

In Mexico there are very few bathtubs so almost everyone showers. Although there are two words for shower here we use bañarse.

En México hay muy pocas tinas pues casi todos toman duchas. Aunque hay dos palabras por duchar, duchar y tomar una regadera, aquí usamos bañarse.

Do they have hot springs there gringo? - Jraider, Oct 8, 2014
Showers always make me feel cleaner. :) - rac1, Oct 8, 2014
Regadera is a shower. Its a noun so it is the physical space. No hot springs nearby. - gringojrf, Oct 8, 2014
Is it a mexican word ?? because usually the noun used for shower is "la ducha".. Mexican spanish has many typical words ..hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Comes from ' regar' to irrigate, Jimminy. Todos los días riego las plantas.. - annierats, Oct 8, 2014
Ohh . ok .. I get it Annie, thanks .. makes sense :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014

Algunas personas sienten placer de bañarse en la piscina de borde infinito, pero me satisfago por una ducha ordinaria.

Some people enjoy bathing in the infinity pools, but I am satisfied with an ordinary shower.

I like me some hot tub once in a while :-) - Jraider, Oct 8, 2014
I think it would be nice..but I prefer a jacuzzi. :) - rac1, Oct 8, 2014
Good tip, Joy :) An infinity pool seems to have infinite size, but actually it's a clever design. - Raja-jani, Oct 8, 2014
Ohh ok, we don't have that concept here ... I just go to the regular pool in my residential society, once in a while :( - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014

En Colombia (sin dudo en otros lugares) en las casas que no tienen calefones, necesitas bañarte “al indio”. Es decir hierves el aqua en la estufa y la mesclas con aqua en un balde para que esté un poco caliente. Te lavas en cuclillas en el baño que tiene un desagüe en el suelo, entonces con un bol te enjuagas. Yo prefiero una ducha con calefón.

In Colombia (no doubt in other places) in houses that don’t have water heaters, you need to bathe “al indio” (like an Indian). That is to say you boil water on the stove and mix it with water in a bucket so that it’s sufficiently hot. You wash squatting down in the bathroom which has a floor drain, then with a bowl you rinse off. I prefer a shower with a water heater.

Indians have a water heater sir and a bath tub, they don't bathe like this. haha .. yeah I have never been to a village so may be there they do but not in cities, haha .. this is so funny - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
But, I will sure try this, just for fun, haha - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Sir Jubilado, I think you are talking about the red indians :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
I don't know when we use the word "Indian" in the Americas it's always a bit vague and at any rate I did not invent the phrase "al indio". - Jubilado, Oct 8, 2014
Sir, In the americas the term Indians is usually used to refer to the red Indians aborigenes of the American continent) because when - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Columbus was on the quest to discover India he accidentally reached America and thinking that he has discovered India he named the local tribes there as Indios (Spanish for Indians) .. so this vagueness is all columbus's wrong doing .. haha - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
But in the Republic of India the bathrooms are exactly the same as the west, the only difference is that we don't use toilet papers, instead we use water jets (built in) that is more comfortable for indians .. hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 8, 2014
Interesting...How are you, Jubilado? - rac1, Oct 8, 2014

Normalmente me ducho una o dos veces al día, a veces tres, pero casi nunca me baño en una tina, y cuando lo hago, es un acontecimiento con champán, velas, y mi esposa.

Normally I shower once or twice a day, sometimes three times, but I bathe in a tub almost never, and when I do so, it is an event with champagne, candles, and my wife.

Aunque baño a mi Leo sólo una vez a la semana, el gasto de bañarlo de una vez es más que el gasto mensual de baño de toda la familia.

Even though I bathe Leo just once a wk, the expense for his single bath is more than the total bathing expenses for the whole family,ha
