Dropping the 's'...

Dropping the 's'...

I'm beginning to listen a bit more carefully to some Spanish in interviews etc. Is it quite common to drop the 's' at the ends of words like 'los' or 'nos', or at least does it become quite indistinct ?

Welcome to Baja. They tend to drop the end of everything. Very difficult to understand. Put a few marbles in your mouth and start speaking and you will begin to get the sense of the Spanish here.

Yes it is - in some places it is as good always dropped - Chile and parts of Bolivia for sure.

Example - Ma o meno and not más o menos

Hello Falda,

Welcome back smile

You asked:

This is a very common practice in a certain region in the south of Spain called Andalucia where the natives drop the last sound/s of the words and if you listen carefully you might notice the final sound/s of the words being dropped on words like pescados (fish) niños (children) o menos (less) t name just a few! lol wink

I hope this helps smile

Thanks. Much like French, then. - Faldaesque, Oct 7, 2014
Possibly, but to be honest I have not heard people 9natives) missing off sounds in French most of the french I have heard spoken has been from wel-spoken natives who speak it clearly - FELIZ77, Oct 7, 2014
You are welcome, Falda :) - FELIZ77, Oct 7, 2014

Yes, it's extremely common. It's something you'll need to develop an ear for. I don't think there's one Spanish speaking country that's exempt from this practice. And if you've get exposed to it for too long you may find yourself doing it.

You will feel quite at home in Andalucía, not an 's' is ever heard at the latter end of any word.. Nor many endings either , a lot consonants are lost as well, for reasons unknown. Don't worry! Go with the flow. ' Hasta luego' is pronounced ''a'a'ue'o'' . It's easy just to say ' hasta ahorita' in reply..
