Am I correct in thinking 'aburrido' is used to mean both 'bored' and 'boring' & I need to choose 'ser' or 'estar' to make the distinction ?

Estoy aburrido = I'm bored

Este hombre es aburrido = This man is boring

?

Soy aburrido = I am boring.

Estoy aburrido = I am bored.

English only has one "to be" verb so it can't do the "estoy" and "soy" trick.

So we need another way of doing it. ---ing and ---ed..

Te estoy aburriendo?

Am I boring you?

Note that in English the ---ed adjective can not be used with inanimate objects.

The book is boring. ok

but not "The book is bored."

Hello Falda,

You asked;

Aburrido = ambos bored y boring... ¿ Es corecto ? Am I correct in thinking 'aburrido' is used to mean both 'bored' and 'boring' & I need to choose 'ser' or 'estar' to make the distinction ? Estoy aburrido = I'm bored Este hombre es aburrido = That man is boring

The verb estar is used with the past participle of the verb aburrir to say: I am bored, you are bored, she is bored,etc...

ex:1 Estoy muy aburrido = I am very bored/ I'm bored stiff

Estar de algo = To be fed up of something:

2.Estoy aburrido de sus bromas = I'm fed up/with her jokes.

The verb ser, when used in conjunction with the past participle of the verb aburrir is used to mean boring

ex's

1 Es un trabajo muy aburrido = It's a really boring/tedious job.

2 La conferencia fue aburridísima =The lecture was really bording

To be bored with something: Estar aburrido/estar harto /o estar cansado de algo

However, to get (become) bored is translated using the verb: aburrirse

Ex: She gets bored easily (quickly) = Se aburre pronto

All examples, except the last one, are courtesy of Oxford Spanish Dictionary (4th edn)

I hope this helps smile

Yes. it can also mean bore. That man is a bore.

This is not the only word like this.

Listo. I am ready. Estoy listo. I am smart. Soy listo.
