In english. They play baseball.

Gracias RonRB

Gramatically speaking jugar should always be used with the preposition 'a'.

Juego al fútbol. Etc

But the English influence is starting to be seen in some places and 'jugar + noun) is even becoming recognised as a valid option by RAE.

Wow, Kiwi, I never expected it to be accepted by R.A.E. Thanks for the interesting teaching point - FELIZ77, Oct 3, 2014
It´s a shame that RAE is following Oxford in allowing more incorrect language spoken each year by calling it "se habla coloquial" and "accepted". Apparently they have both given up trying to make people speak correctly - 005faa61, Oct 4, 2014

Julian , I agree with you that it is a terrible shame I am surprised and disappointed by Oxford for doing this ! - FELIZ77, Oct 4, 2014

Hello Ron,

It is the same with other sports: juego al fútbol , jugamos al tenis juegan al badminton etc...

Here, you have the verb in the infinitive form: jugar + a and then add el fútbol and a + el =al, so it becomes al

I don't think it would be correct to say the above sentence without the contracted word al (a + el) before béisbol although it would probably be understood by Spanish speaking natives provided that your (a person's) pronounciation was reasonably accurate.

I hope this helps wink
