soplar ( soh-plahr' )

verb ( to blow )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Me encanta la brisa fresca que sopla en el otoño.

I love the fresh breeze that blows in the autumn.

2. No importa cuánto soples, esas velas no se van a apagar; son de broma.

It doesn't matter how much you blow, those candles aren't going to go out; they're trick candles.

Amby, I don't think we need a subjunctive in the second example ... Cuanto soplas it should be in my opinion, Pablo what do you say ?? - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
I personally will stick my neck out and say I agree with the subjunctive. But that doesn't prove anything. ;) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
There really are bigger problems in the world than the Spanish subjnctive. :)))) - ian-hill, Oct 2, 2014
But i can get my head around most of those :) - ian-hill, Oct 2, 2014
In this case it is an "opinion" and I would not use the subjunctive - but what do I know? - ian-hill, Oct 2, 2014
Buena imagen mi amiga. Gracias :-)! - Jraider, Oct 2, 2014
I like subjunctive because it is referring to something that has not happened- you might blow, you might not, but if you do no matter how hard you might blow, they are not going to go out. We'll see what Pablo thinks. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
Excellent quote from H.H.! - Jubilado, Oct 2, 2014
Haha ,, seems like we are all confused .. haha , let me try to disect the sentence for you guys ,, so we can understand its anatomy better ... - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
Muchas gracias a todos. :)♥ Let me know....lol - rac1, Oct 2, 2014
Well, Bosue, this is the whole thing, there is a very widespread misconception about subjunctives that wherever one sees uncertainty one puts the subjunctive in, subjunctive is a rather intricate subject and uncertainty is just one of its various qualifyi - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
No importa registers how you feel about it, unless you use si (which isn't followed by present subjunctive) it normally will be subjunctive. Look at the link I am posting- the majority are in the subjunctive. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
qualifying parameters .. for example first of all we need to see how many clauses are there in the setence, then we need to establish the relationship between the clauses ..like main clause and dependent clause, if there is a dependent clause then we need - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
http://www.linguee.com/english-spanish/search?source=auto&query=no+importa+cu - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
to figure out the type of dependent clause as the rules of the application of subjunctive may vary based on the typle of clauses we are dealing with ... so I am still thinking about this one . hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
OK Sure Bosque, let me go through the link.. thanks - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
I had to put it through tinyurl to make it work try this: http://tinyurl.com/l2cz9vt - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
The no importa tells how you feel about what follows, and what you are registering a felling about is "cuánto soples". - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
Ok Bosque .. I applied my tiny brain and here is what I have .... Subjunctive is needed .. explanation : No importa is like several other impersonal expressions where we always use subjunctive in the dependant clause - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
for example "es importante que ..... es importante que Bosque me de un abrozo (It is important that Bosque gives me a hug .. haha) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
Es imprescindible que nadie me hable groseramente - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
Es dudoso que Amber me vaya a abrazar - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
Now you have it. I wrote felling where I meant feeling. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
So all these are impersonal expressions which when used with a noun clause (As the pendant clause) will always need a subjunctive .. - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
Similarly .. there are many such impersonal expressions like "es lastima que" , "es mejor que" , "conviene que" etc. any many more which will always require a subjunctive in the following noun clause as these impoersonal expressions either express an - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
opinion. or a suggestion or a command which triggers the use of the subjunctive in the following dependent noun clause .... and no importa also seems to be one such impersonal expression which essentially does express an opinion and is followed by a noun - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
clause with a different subject so subjunctive is needed per the rules of Subjunctive as they relate to dependent noun clauses .. - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
for example : no importa que Bosque me de un punetaso porque es mayor que yo .. It doesn't matter if Bosque gives me a punch as he is elder to me .. haha - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
So, yes, the final verdict of the house is that Subjunctive is needed .. why ? .. because of the aforementioned reason/explanation ... So dilemma demystified.. Subjunctive it is .. haha - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
SD is full of bad translations, this one was just fine :) Hi Jimmy I am glad to see you again :) - 003e54f5, Oct 2, 2014
Hi Pablo, Leo says howdy :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014

Cuando visitamos a los tíos de mi esposa hace más de dos años, nos llevaron a un museo del vidrio en Tacoma, y además de ver todas las obras del arte, pasamos una hora más o menos viendo a un artista quien estaba soplando vidrio, y quien creó una ballena de vidrio muy bella durante ese tiempo. Era muy impresionante; sin embargo creo que el tío de mi esposa habría preferido ver la creación del salmón que se había hecho más temprano antes, porque es un pescador de salmones muy entregado cumplidor.

When we visited my wife’s aunt and uncle more than two years ago, they took us to a glass museum in Tacoma, and in addition to viewing the works of art, we spent about an hour watching an artist who was blowing glass, and who created a very beautiful glass whale during that time. It was very impressive; nonetheless I think that my wife’s uncle would have preferred to see the creation of the salmon that had been made earlier, because he is a serious salmon fisherman.

Hi Bosque. very nice post ... just a little suggestion though (not a correction, just a suggestion ) . It may be better to say del Vidrio instead of de vidrio ..Pablo do you agree with me ? - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
and if you allow me to suggest another one please "que se habia hecho antes" mas temprano and antes both mean "earlier" but in different senses .. whereas antes talks about past events ,, temprano and mas temprano talk about the activities .. like I wake - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014

I think you are correct that "más temprano" is better than antes. So I changed it. I never erase my original so we can all benefit from seeing what not to do. Erasing the original does not let people who look at it after learn what not to do. ;) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
Anyway, nice to see you again. ;) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
I meant to say antes is better than "más temprano". If I could get rid of stupid errors my performance in both languages would be better. :( - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
Haha, ask me my friend, I am the king of stupidity ... but yes I love the way you do it .. I don't know how to format my posts else I would follow your lead too .. hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
start strike out, end strike out. The bold is on the menu (for added), but also ** both start and end. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
It did not accept it- left caret? (shift comma) then s then right caret (shift period) - 3 total characters to start the strike out, the same with a /s instead of s inside the carets to end the strike out. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
OK Bosque, thanks I will sure give it a try today so please take a gander at my post and suggest some corrections and then I will do it the same way as you do :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
I have never heard "entregado" used this way. Did you hear this regionally? I would say "prudente" or "cumplidor" - - 005faa61, Oct 2, 2014
Also "las obras DEL arte" (I think you mean the art pertaing only to glass) / I don´t think the museum is made of glass, so "Museo de los vidros" is less confusing - 005faa61, Oct 2, 2014
No hay de qué, Bosque. Después de todo, tu post es buenísimo - 005faa61, Oct 2, 2014
Gracias, Julian, por la corrección. La variedad regional que quiero aprender es la de ti, así que cada vez que lo que yo haya escrito te suena raro, te agradecería tu opinión. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014
Oh, I deleted and rewrote the post not recognizing that you had already answered. Whoops. Thanks for all the corrections. - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014

Bosque's posts are always heavy duty .. haha .. replete with new words for every one to learn from :) - Joydeep_Singh, Oct 2, 2014
No I just meant Julian's that starts "no hay de qué" should be after not before mine that said "Gracias.." because I deleted and made subtle changes to the grammar while he was posting his. Who knows for the better or the worse. ;) - bosquederoble, Oct 2, 2014

Aquí en Andalucía ya hemos tenido tres días de levante, un viento fuerte que sopla del este. Cuando sopla el levante hace calor, hay polvo por todas partes y cantan las chicharras por la noche.

Here in Andalucía we've had now three days of Levante, a strong easterly wind. When the Levante blows it is hot , there is dust everywhere and the cicadas sing at night.

Si me concinas un pastel, no es me importa que hay velas a soplar.

If you make me a cake, it's not important to me that there are candles to blow out.

Me encanto dormir con una brisa tibia soplando por mi. (Am I missing a verb here, or is the gerund sufficient by itself?)

I like to sleep with a warm breeze blowing over me.
