valiente ( vah-lee-ehn'-teh )

adjective ( brave, courageous )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Phineas es un chico muy valiente. Está dispuesto a hacerlo todo.

Phineas is a very brave boy. He's willing to do anything.

2. Yo pienso que se tiene que ser muy valiente para limpiar las ventanas de los rascacielos.

I think you have to be very brave to wash the windows of skyscrapers.

Aunque yo creo que la verdad es que alguien es valiente cuando puede hacer lo que es necesario a pesar de sus temores, y no porque simplemente porque no tiene ni temor ni un sentido de auto preservación, algunos periodistas le llamaron el gen de la valentía al gen para de la estatmina; y lo hicieron a pesar del hecho de que es la ausencia del gen la que causa que los ratones tengan defectos en el temor innato y el aprendido.

Even though I believe that the truth is that someone is brave when they are able to do what is necessary in spite of their fears, and not simply because they have neither fear nor a sense of self-preservation, some journalists called the gene for stathmin the bravery gene; and did this despite the fact that it is the absence of the gene that causes mice to have defects in innate and learned fear.

This is why scientists don't believe in altruism :-)! - Jraider, Sep 30, 2014
Oh, scientists believe in altruism. Then they seek out the genetic basis and then try to understand why those genes were selected for. Social scientists have done all kinds of studies on the survival benefits of altruism. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 30, 2014
My anthropology professors did not support that theorem. - Jraider, Sep 30, 2014
Some do, some don't. It is hard to know, especially as studies are really hard do without bias. - bosquederoble, Sep 30, 2014
Yes, I belive in it, Bosque, why else do humans care for the elderly etc.. Because at some point it was of benefit.. - annierats, Sep 30, 2014
It was of benefit to care for others in the group, because of reciprocity, and benefit when they recover- which may have had a generalization to caring for those with no hope of being productive again, as emotions work on a level that does not have - bosquederoble, Sep 30, 2014
the cognitive power to calculate a cost vs. benefit analysis. But those decisions were sometimes made anyway, against instinct. Remember my comment about how we have an instinct to find the young of other mammalian species adorable, a generalization - bosquederoble, Sep 30, 2014

De joven era jinete amateur de carreras, aunque no fui nunca una persona muy valiente, y muchas veces me faltaba el coraje cuando me subí a un caballo desconocido para montarlo en una carrera de 5 kilometros sobre vallas, pero como los caballos pura sangres son muy valientes y ardientes, normalemente en llegar a la salida de la carrera se me habían quitado los nervios.

As a youngster I was an amateur jockey even though I never was a very brave person. Many times I felt a lack of courage upon mounting an unknown horse in order to ride it in a 3-mile race over fences, but as thoroughbred horses are very brave and keen, by the time we got to the start of the race my nervousness would usually have vanished.

Dear Annie, won't it be better to say "El jinete aficionado" ?? - 00b055e0, Oct 1, 2014
No, Jimmy, an amateur is a person who does something for pleasure, as opposed to a professional who does it for money. The professionals are also usually rather better at their chosen sport and often started off as amateurs! - annierats, Oct 1, 2014
Yes dear but Aficionado also means an amateur .. hehe .. :) - 00b055e0, Oct 1, 2014
Ok.00b, but I've never heard that used in sports, but I dare say it could be, it usually just means ' lkeen on' ' passionate about' etc. - annierats, Oct 2, 2014

Si me visitas, espero que seas valiente, porque mi gato es muy antipático.

If you visit me, I hope you are brave, because my cat is mean.

Cuando visito España el ano que viene, promiso ser valiente y hablar frequentemente con la gente en español. (Lo dice hoy; en seis meses, quien sabe? LOL)

When I visit Spain next year, I promise to speak frequently with people in Spanish.

La policia demonstran mucho valiente. Encontran criminales con armas peligrosas cada dia.

The police are brave. They encounter criminals with dangerous weapons every day.

When the adjective describes an inherent quality of the noun it comes before the noun, these are called epithets in the language of grammar :) .. for example ,, un feroz leon (a ferocious lion), un valinete soldado, (because being ferocious is considered - 00b055e0, Oct 1, 2014
a natural characteristic of a Lion and every lion is essentially ferocious so ,, the adjective feroz will be used as an epithet) - 00b055e0, Oct 1, 2014
