El Surtidor (I am a bit confused)

Question

Hi Friends,,

I am a bit confused here .. as until this date I used to think that El surtidor is a gas station ..(Una Gasolinera) but today I read in some dictionary that it is a spout or a pump and I tried looking it up on SD but couldn't find much information ,,

Here I found another term : La Manguera del surtido which seems to be the thing (jet hose or jet nossle that goes inside the tank hole to pump in the gas) ..

Can some one please help clarify my obfuscation here . I will be grateful.

Hi there. Surtidor has 3 meanings in Spanish (according to the RAE) ordered from wider to more specific: (These are free translations)

1. Que surte - Something that provides or dispenses.
2. Water jet that pumps or spurts, especially upwards. That would be Ian's example.
3. Pump that draws from an underground fuel tank to refuel motor vehicles.

In addition:

• Gasolinera - Gas station.
• Surtidor (de combustible) - (Gas station) pump.
• Manguera (del surtidor) - (Pump) hose.

I hope this helps to clarify things.

He went over to drink from the (water) fountain.
