rubio ( roo'-byoh )

roo'-byoh

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Mi sobrina tiene el pelo rubio.

My niece has blond hair.

2. El pelo rubio es más común en los países escandinavos.

Blond hair is more common in Scandinavian countries.

Las mujeres rubias son a menudo el blanco de las bromas tontas.

Blonde women are often the target of dumb jokes.

Aunque no era una rubia de verdad, Marilyn Monroe se hizo famosa por desempeñar una hacer de rubia en películas- y corre un rumor que tuvo aventuras con algunos de los Kennedy y que, porque sabía demasiado de sus secretos y amenazaba a con divulgar algo de los ellos, la asesinaron- por lo menos esto es lo que mi esposa cree.

Although she was not really a blonde, Marilyn Monroe became famous for playing one in movies- and there is a rumor going around that she had affairs with some of the Kennedys and that, because she knew too many of their secrets and was threatening to divulge some of them, she was murdered- at least that is what my wife thinks.

Great entry! I very much doubt she was murdered. This particular magazine is well known for telling outrageous lies. - 00ffada9, Sep 24, 2014
My wife also believes that extraterrestrials have visited the earth. This one is more believable to me. :D - bosquederoble, Sep 24, 2014
Which one; the one about extraterrestrials or the one about Marilyn? - rac1, Sep 24, 2014
The one about Marilyn- that could actually have happened. I don't see our government capable of keeping a secret about aliens for any legnth of time. - bosquederoble, Sep 24, 2014
I don't know how serious my wife's beliefs are in any of this, I think she just says some of it to be controversial. At least she seems to believe that we actually put astronauts on the moon. Maybe because she saw that live on TV. :D - bosquederoble, Sep 24, 2014
I agree with your wife :-)! - Jraider, Sep 24, 2014
Aunque no fuera rubia ( I think?) - annierats, Sep 24, 2014
I am stating though that she wasn't, even though she wasn't, not casting doubt, even if she weren't. I know for a fact she dyed. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 24, 2014
You knew her! - annierats, Sep 24, 2014
No, but I know her history well enough and have seen pictures of her before she was famous. :D - bosquederoble, Sep 24, 2014

Os voy a confesar un secreto: Hoy en día no tengo ni idea de que sea el color verdadero de mi pelo , con tantos champus para aclararlo y con los reflejos del sol, y los efectos de la edad,¿ quien sabe? A menos se ve rubio. Más o menos .

I'll tell you a secret . Nowadays I have no idea whatsoever what my real haircolour might be , not with all these shampoos to lighten it and the sun kissing it , plus the effects of aging, who knows? At least it still looks blond. Sort of.

En nuestro país tenemos muchos chistes de las mujeres rubias , como los ejemplos de tontería y ignorancia. Eso no es justo porque la inteligencia no tiene nada que ver con el color de pelo.

In our country we have many pleasantries of the blond women, like the examples of foolery and ignorance. That is not just because the intelligence has nothing to do with the color of the hair.

Suggestion: "In our country we have many pleasant looking blond women that are associated with examples of foolery and ignorance. That is because intelligence has nothing to do with blond hair." Is that what you were attempting to say? - rac1, Sep 24, 2014
No, I wanted to say that there are jokes about foolish women and it is said that especially the blond ones are so foolish. - porcupine7, Sep 24, 2014
In our country we have many "jokes" about blond women, they are said to be stupid and ignorant, but intelligence has nothing to do with the color of hair. -- This is better amiga. - ian-hill, Sep 24, 2014

It comes from the notion that a pretty blond relies on her looks rather than her intelligence to get what she wants. - Jraider, Sep 24, 2014
Well acutally it doesn Porcu , The sharper and stronger your brain the more pigment is releases into the hair follicles and the more the pigment the darker the hair .. hahahahaha .. but this is just my theory ,, and it is yet to be proved so don't take - 00b055e0, Sep 24, 2014

American culture is very strange. It values women with blond hair, yet encourages the perception that they are not intelligent. Maybe American women are supposed to be beautiful and dumb.

La cultura americana es muy extraña. Valora a mujeres con el pelo rubio, pero promueve la percepción que no son inteligentes. Tal vez las mujeres americanas deben de ser bellas y estupidas y bonita.

Hello HCA, I have no idea about american women but I can sure suggest you a correction,, Animar doesn't seem the right word in this context .. Animar means to motivate some one... you could use adelantar or promover or impulsar in my opinion.. - 00b055e0, Sep 24, 2014

Gracias a todos..The human hair market is booming here.Ladis spend $200 or more on "hair that won't grow.".Even at that, the more natural it looks, the better. - osas-baby, Sep 24, 2014
sorry I meant "ladies" spend - osas-baby, Sep 24, 2014
No Bosque ,, Raro ia correct .. raro is not used as an adjective in this sentence and doesn't refer to the girl being strange .. but is used as an adverb with parecer ,, and adverbs dont have genders .. if it were estar instead of parecer then it would be - 00b055e0, Sep 24, 2014
an adjective in acusative case and will take the gender of the noun .. but here raro is correct - 00b055e0, Sep 24, 2014
I don't know about Spanish, but in English "look" is a linking verb and "weird" is a predicate adjective. - AnnRon, Sep 24, 2014

En mi país nadie es rubio salvo solo un poco, Pero cuando yo era un niño tuve cabello casi rubio pero a medida que crecía, mi cabello iban oscurecerse poco a poco y por el momento que llegué mi adolescencia ya era moreno y ya tengo pelo casi negro ..hehe pero en unos años más va a volverse griz.. Esto es lo que se llama el círculo de la vida. haha

In my country no one has blond hair except for very few people, but when I was little I had almost blond hair but as I grew up they started darkening little by little and by the time I reached my teenage they had already turned almost brownish black ..haha and now have almost black hair but in a few more years they are are all going to turn grey .. This is what is called the circle of life.. haha

It would be better to make several smaller sentences rather than a run on sentence. :):) - rac1, Sep 24, 2014
Annie, it makes perfect sense.. The main subject of the sentence is nadie (indefinite pronoun) and salvo (except) is a preposition connecting un poco (again a pronoun) to the main subject (which refers to people not hair) so un poco here reverberates the - 00b055e0, Sep 24, 2014

Mi primera novia era una chica muy linda que tenía cabello rubio. Era muy inteligente y hoy en día es una psiquiatra. No he visto a ella por mucho años.

In your sentence, you can't use "was" and "is" together. - rac1, Sep 24, 2014
