destrozar ( deh-stroh-sahr' )

verb ( to destroy, to smash, to ruin; to devastate (emotionally) )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Dejé el vestido sobre la cama y el gato desgraciado me lo arruinó.

I left the dress on top of the bed and the wretched cat ruined it.

2. Recibir la carta de rechazo de la universidad la destrozó.

Receiving the rejection letter from the university devastated her.

right trans would be: 'Dejé el vestido sobre la cama y el gato desgraciado (or 'el desgraciado del gato') me lo arruinó' --'el desgraciado gato' would be 'the poor cat' and 'destrozo' is too much :D - 003e54f5, Sep 20, 2014

Mi esposa es el amor de mi vida, y tenemos un vínculo tan fuerte que nada podrá destrozarlo jamás, ni siquiera el hecho que ella me obligó a escribir una frase tan empalagosa.

My wife is the love of my life, and we have a bond so strong that nothing will ever be able to shatter it, not even the fact that she forced me to write such a sappy sentence.

Es peligroso dejar solo un cachorro en la casa, porque puede ser que comience a destrozar todo.

It is dangerous to leave a puppy alone in the house, because it can be that it starts to destroy everything.

Friend, English corrections: "to leave a puppy alone in the house" sounds much better, and "it may be that it will start..." is one way to improve the second part of your sentence. - Jubilado, Sep 20, 2014

La única cosa que destrozo es el idioma español cuando trate trato de me parecer docto (un aprendido).

The only thing I destroy is the Spanish language when I try to appear learned.

Some of the tenors in the barbershop choir in which I sing often sing out of key and ruin the harmony. I don't understand why people who can't carry a tune insist on joining singing groups.

Algunos de los tenores en el coro de la barbería en la que canto frecuencia cantar fuera de tono y destrozan la armonía. No intuyendo por qué las personas que no puede llevar una melodía insisten en unirse a los grupos que cantan.

There's a book called "Wreck this journal" which gives you steps to wreck it, I think some really creative things can come out of it.

Hay un libro llamado "Destroza este diario" que te da pasos para que lo destruyas, creo que del libro pueden salir cosas muy creativas.

some one may point out that you have incorrectly used estar instead of "Ser" but before some one does let me mention that in the Spanish true passive constructions ser is used when we are talking about an action but if the verb is rather emphasizing a s - 00b055e0, Sep 20, 2014
a state (and not an action) then "estar" needs to be used .. in your sentence as we are talking about the state of being destroyed (post war) so in my opintion the use of "estar" is absolutely correct. .. Good job - 00b055e0, Sep 20, 2014
You could say, "After a war" and still use, "are destroyed", or you can say, "After the war"....."were destroyed".." - rac1, Sep 20, 2014

He visto este verbo por primera vez y me pregunto si se utiliza en habla común. Si cualquier nativo me pueda alumbrar de esto, voy a agradecerselo mucho.

I have seen this verb for the very first time and I wonder if it is even used in common parlance, If any native could enlighten me with this I will be very grateful.
