Ray, people sometimes ask these kind of questions as part of self study it does not always indicate homework However, the fill in the spaces with the correct verb adjective, etc... almost certainly is ! ;) - FELIZ77, Sep 18, 2014

You can also say/I would say: Son las cinco menos cuarto (It is 5 o' clock less a quarter)

Another way of saying it would be: Son las cuatro (4) y cuarenta y cinco but I prefer and usually use the first way I have offered you.

The normal way in Spain is to say The hour + the minutes up to half past the hour eg 4:30 pm would be Son las 4 (cinco) y media

then to say the next hour minus 30 minutes eg 4:50pm (ten to five) would be: Son las 5 (cinco) menos 10 (diez)

The advantage of this way is that you can learn to tell the time in Spanish and give someone the time even if you are a beginner and have only learnt to count to 30 in Spanish.

You just have to be careful to remember that 1 am/pm is always translated in the singular form Es la una not Son las .... All the other hours are translated using the plural form Son las ...+ the hour etc...
