helado ( eh-lah'-doh )

adjective ( freezing, frozen, icy )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Salí afuera sin guantes y ahora tengo las manos heladas.

I went outside without gloves and now my hands are freezing.

2. Cuidado al conducir, que las carreteras están heladas.

Be careful when driving; the roads are icy.

It gives me the heebie-jeebies when people drive their cars on the frozen lake.

Me da los pelos de punta cuando la gente conduce sus coches en el lago helado.

Me sorprendo mucho de que no han incluido el significado mas importante de la palabra del dia ... Helado tambien significa "Ice Cream" una de las cosas mas sobresas del mundo y mi postre favorita.. Como pudieran dejar algo tan delicioso como un "ice cream" .. me enojo mucho :(

I am so surprised that they have not included the most important meaning of the word of the day. Helado also means an Ice Cream, one of the most delicious things in the wolrd and my favorite dessert, How could they leave out something as delicious as an ice cream .. I am angry :(

En los años últimos de mi empleo, antes de jubilarme, nunca manejé he manejado cuando las carreteras tuvieron condiciones heladas. Hubiera tomado sobre cualquier carretera que tuviera condición helada. Tomaría un día libre.

In the last years of my employment, before retiring, I never drove when there were icy conditions on the highways. I would take a day off.

Para practicar: En los años últimos de mi empleo, antes de jubilarme, nunca he manejado sobre cualquir carretera que tuviera condición helada. Tomaría un dia libre.

¡Mil gracias, Jimmy!

True, but in every day speech, it is understood that if you "spill" a bucket of freezing water, it must not be completely frozen. - rac1, Sep 15, 2014
Literally, yes, but most, if not all, understand its meaning. - rac1, Sep 15, 2014
"Tip" is good too. - rac1, Sep 15, 2014
Im congealed by this discussion!!!!! - Jraider, Sep 15, 2014
Amber, don't worry, we all understand the meaning ,, Jubilado seems to be kidding ,, this is the figurative use of the word frozen which is quite OK .. hehe every thing aint literal in the regular day to day speech :) - 00b055e0, Sep 15, 2014
It is leaving me cold :) - ian-hill, Sep 15, 2014
En el dia de hoy esta de moda que vierten un cobo/balde del agua helada sobre la gente famosa - 00b055e0, Sep 15, 2014
Porcu .. you can't use the se passive for verter in this context .. verter in passive would mean "is poured by" ,, for example .. se vierte el agua (por Leo) ... The water was spilled (by Leo) - 00b055e0, Sep 15, 2014

Findy, I would say that it can rather add bugs too the water, The surface of the bottle can be contaminated with some serious bacteria and other germs and toxins .. I would rather use clean ice cubes .. as the bottles can't be sterilized every time. - 00b055e0, Sep 15, 2014

I give moderately cold water to Leo straight from the fridge, and if it's too cold I make sure to add some regular water to make it a bit less cold as too much cold can spoil Dog's throat and give them a serious throat infection .. - 00b055e0, Sep 15, 2014
I wonder if a dog really likes his water cold????? - Jraider, Sep 15, 2014
depends on the weather JR ,, if you are in a place like mine then yes of course ,, my Leo won't drink unless I add cold fresh water, he can even sniff the water temperature without even touching his tongue to the water - 00b055e0, Sep 15, 2014

Thanks for the help. The water outside here in Las Vegas actually gets HOT if I don't either change it all day or add ice cubes/frozen water. We have 110F in the shade on average in the summer. - Findy, Sep 15, 2014
We keep water inside the house too, but they like to come outside with me. :) - Findy, Sep 15, 2014
(Oh, and the water bottle is washed each time we use it & freeze it.) Our dogs love ice too! Again, it brings relief because they are so hot. ;) - Findy, Sep 15, 2014

Polar bears like icy things, especially during a hot summer in the zoo.

A los osos polares les gusta algo helado, sobre todo durante un verano caliente en el zoo.
