sordo ( sohr'-doh )

adjective ( deaf; dull, muffled )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Nuestra vecina es sorda y se comunica por lenguaje de señas.

Our neighbor is deaf and communicates through sign language.

2. Del sótano se oye un ruido sordo. ¡Llamemos a la policía!

A muffled sound can be heard from the basement. Let's call the police!

Antes, cuando Leo ladraba, no pude oírlo ladrando y siempre creía que él es mudo pero luego me dí cuenta que él es perfectamente normal y la única razón que no podía oírlo fue que yo era un sordo .. qué lastima , hahaha.

Earlier, when leo used to bark, I couldn't hear him barking and I always used to think that he is mute/dumb but later I realised that he was absolutely normal and the only reason I couldn't hear him was that I was deaf.. jejejejeje ... what a pitty :(

Blindness alienates a man much more than deafness.

A deaf man is still a part of the everyday life, who can at least imagine the sounds of nature, feel the beats in music, and see the smiling faces of his loved ones.

A blind man's world is his canvas, where he has to painstakingly paint out the world around him and scenes of both mirth and pain. The only way he can sense happiness is through his own laughter.

La ceguera enajena un hombre mucho más que la sordera.

Un hombre sordo es aún parte de la vida diaría. Al menos puede imaginar los sonidos de la naturaleza, apreciar el ritmo de la música y ver las sonrisas de sus seres queridos.

El mundo de un hombre ciego es su canvás en que laboriosamente recrea el mundo que le rodea y escenas de felicidad y de dolor. Siente alegría sólo a través de su propia risa.

Alienated

Hmm. you've got a point, even though any disability can be really horrible but blindness is the worst of all. I will donate my eyes when I die(along with my glasses) so some one else could see the world through them .. - 00b055e0, Sep 13, 2014
It's good that you would help Jimmy. . . Cornea transplant can be a wonderful memorial - working through "The Lions Eyebank" - Allowed my daughter Amy's eyes to help two people to see. . . - Esteban_317, Sep 13, 2014
I am only aware of eye donation (after death) .. what is a cornea transplant?? - 00b055e0, Sep 13, 2014
Eye donation, AFAIK, only involves donation of the cornea (the front portion of the eye that acts as 2/3rd of the refracting mechanism of the eye). The other parts can't really be transplanted (and account for a minority of blindnesses). It may be used - Helado_eclectico, Sep 13, 2014
for research/education purposes, of course, as in medical education. Oh, and thanks for the compliments, rac. Hope I got the Spanish right beside the sentiment, lol. - Helado_eclectico, Sep 13, 2014

No hay nada nuevo sobre actuar sordera a alguien que no quieres oír. Incluso los animales hacen eso!

There's nothing new about acting deaf to someone you don't want to hear. Even animals do that!

In essence, it is functionally "upon" - was startled upon hearing screams. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 12, 2014

Las mujeres están paradas enfrente de las puertas del cielo y San Pedro quien les dijo, “Todas de ustedes quienes no les metían los cuernos con sus esposos a la derecha, y todas que sí hicieron así, a la izquierda.” Todas excepto una movieron a la izquierda. Entonces San Pedro le dijo a ella “Y tú allá, la sorda, sigue tus comadres.”

The women were standing at the pearly gates in front of St. Peter who said to them, “All those who have not cheated on your husbands, to the right, and all those who have, to the left.” All of them except one moved to the left. Then St. Peter said to her, “And you there, the deaf lady, follow your companions.”

Como mi madre es parcialmente sorda, cuando nos visita, siempre sube mucho el volumen del televisor y además pone los subtítulos- y esto causa que nadie otro puede más pueda ver la televisión o incluso está estar en la sala con ella.

As my mother is partially deaf, whenever she visits us, she always puts the volume of the television way up and also puts on the subtitles- and this makes it so no one else can watch television or even be in the room with her.

Poor darlings. - rac1, Sep 12, 2014
hehe But one day it'll be me with the TV volume way up, missing my MIL. - Findy, Sep 12, 2014
I can somewhat relate too since when I was in primary school, we had a teacher with hearing problems who was in charge of our 'Movie Day'. She had a lot of trouble with the volume control, though in the end she got a hearing aid and all was good. - Helado_eclectico, Sep 12, 2014

I do like the "ni siquiera estar" (I think my está is a true error now that you point it out). I am fairly sure poner can be used. The rest of your suggestions are stylistic I think. - bosquederoble, Sep 12, 2014
