Hello saynemoore,
Welcome to the SpanishDict forum 
You can also say, and I think this is much more common:
¿De dónde eres? (familiar form for addressing children, younger people, friends/ ¿De dónde es Ud? (Polite form for addressing strangers, people in authority: eg, police officers, teachers etc... = Where are you from?
People will just as happily tell you their country of birth/origen.if you ask them this question as they would if you asked them Jp's question..
¿De qué país eres? /¿De qué país es Ud? =What country are you from?
