incómodo ( een-koh'-moh-doh )

adjective ( uncomfortable, awkward )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. Susy is unable to continue with this task as she has other obligations that require her attention. In the meantime, please help one another out as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Los asientos del medio en los aviones son incómodos.

The middle seats on airplanes are uncomfortable.

2. Cuando mis amigos se pelean en frente de mí es muy incómodo.

When my friends fight in front of me it's very uncomfortable.

Sleeping on airplanes is very uncomfortable if not down right impossible.

Dormir en los aviones es muy incómodo si no es completamente imposible.

Me siento más que un poco incómodo debido a todo el rencor en otro hilo de este sitio. Ojalá podamos volver a lo normalidad y respetar de nuevo a todos, no importan sin importar su nacionalidad ni su religión. Es por eso que yo creo que es mejor mantener este esto como un sitio para aprender lenguaje y dejar discusiones de otros temas más polémicos en otros sitios.

I feel more that a little uncomfortable due to all the rancor in another thread at this site. I hope we are able to return to normal and once again respect everyone regardless of their nationality or their religion. This is the reason that I believe that it is better to maintain this as a site for learning language and leave discussions of other, more controversial subjects to other sites.

yes Bosque me too!! discussions about religion and politics(sports as well) always happens among friends and family, we have to be prepared to listen to things that aren't to our liking and to be able to respect them, :) - 003e54f5, Aug 25, 2014

We have friends that we don't agree on with religion, politics or sports- we have made compromises on the Sports, the rest we mostly avoid, and remain respectful when the subject is broached. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 25, 2014
Yes, that is as it should be. - rac1, Aug 25, 2014
Gracias a vos y pienso lo mismo que vos y espero que Marg vuelva y esto no vuelva a pasar - 003e54f5, Aug 25, 2014

Ojala does require que my friend .. to be gramatically correct the right structure is "ojalá + "the conjunction que" + subjunctive.... these are actualy two clauses "ojalá" is the main clause and the rest of it is the subordinate noun clause and as per t - 00b055e0, Aug 26, 2014
the rules of Spanish Geammar you can't join two clauses together without amconjunction (unlike in English) .. may be some natives might be omitting it for the sake of simplicity in coloquial speech but I have never ever seen ojalámused without a que in - 00b055e0, Aug 26, 2014
formal settings or in books ... in English we can do that ,, for example .. we can say .. I hope (that) she comes .. we can simply omit the conjunction "that" and say ,, I hope she comes .. but in spanish it is a "big no no" ... you can't say ,, - 00b055e0, Aug 26, 2014
espero ella venga or ojalá ella venga .. it has to be "espero Q U E ella venga" or ojalá Q U E ella venga.. .... there are many things in the colloquial speech which elect to ignore the grammar (I guess in all languages) but colloquial speech is for - 00b055e0, Aug 26, 2014
the natives who are born with that language ,, but for us Foreign language students the right approach is to learn it "the proper grammar way" so we don't stumble time and again with our constructs ,., being coloquial needs an expertise beyond the scope - 00b055e0, Aug 26, 2014
of a beginner or an inyermediate learner like me .. hehe .. but this is just my opinion my friend .. you may disagree but as far as que is concenred I am quite positive that to be grammatically correct "que" is needed after ojalá .. because ojalámw - 00b055e0, Aug 26, 2014
because ojalá is not just a single word but rather a contraction of a whole clause zipped intoma single word (from an arabic origin) which means "may Alah grant" or some thing like that ,,, so that one word stands for a whole "main clause" in a sentence - 00b055e0, Aug 26, 2014
Besides, the link you have posted is just for a forum discussion where forum members like you and I try to help each other ,, that aint an expert explanation from a grammar expert .. hehe .. trust me on this one my friend .. :) - 00b055e0, Aug 26, 2014
http://lema.rae.es/dpd/?key=ojalá- no que in the only example. I would say you can't argue with RAE, but most likely you can- so I will say one can't argue with RAE. :D - bosquederoble, Aug 26, 2014
http://www.spanishdict.com/topics/show/74 our lesson here even says it can be used either way. - bosquederoble, Aug 26, 2014
my friend, I am not arguing with any one here ., the example you have on the RAE sight is jist an idiomatic expression - 00b055e0, Aug 27, 2014
Ojalá sea para bien ,, is just an idiomatic expression which means ,, "I hope it will be for good" or some thing like that and is again an exception to the rules of grammar ,, as idioms and idiomatic expressions don't follow the rules of grammar which is - 00b055e0, Aug 27, 2014
why we call them idiomatic ... now in place of sea (ser) in this expression, if you use some other verb ,, like ir then you need to use que as itmwon't be idiomatiic any more .. for example .. ojalá que todo vaya bien - 00b055e0, Aug 27, 2014

Me incomoda el sentido de estar incomodo por algo que me incomoda y al sentir esa inquietud incomoda. Sin tener que sentir la incomodidad que sigue esa incomodad para transformarse en una incomodidad real.

It bothers me the sense of being uncomfortable for something that makes me feel awkward and to feel that awkward is unpleasant. Without having to feel that awkwardness that keeps on bothering to transform itself into a real uncomforted thing.

Quien dice que los perros no pueden contraer caries ,, mi Leo ya ha contraido tres en su molares y se siente muy incómodo masticando la comoda por causa de que le duelen los dientes debido a las cavidades dentales. Yo me siento tan preocupado porque no hay dentistas de perros y gatos acá y por eso tengo que dejar un cirujano veterinario realizarle el procedimiento dental bajo anestesia .. me encuentro muy incómodo pensando que qué va a pasar.. muy triste ..

Who says that Dogs don't get dental cavities (tooth decays) .. My Leo has already contracted three in his molars, and feels very uncomfortable chewing his food as the teeth pain due to the cavities ,, I am feeling so worried because there are no dentists for Dogs and Cats and I will just need to let a veterinary surgeon perform the procedure on him ..
