How would you translate the following?:
"cuando en el fondo lo que los impulsó fue el sentirse por encima de los demás seres mortales"
My first thought is:
"when in reality what compelled them was a feeling of superiority."
Thoughts?

I think you have a nice understanding of the concept. I like your interpretation very much.
"cuando en el fondo lo que los impulsó fue el sentirse por encima de los demás seres mortales"
The only thing I could do is put it a bit more of a literal translation.
When at the heart of it (or at the bottom of it all), that which drove them was the sense of being above the rest of the mortal beings.
I wouldn't say it is any better at capturing it though. And it is more clunky. So I would stick with yours.
