All nouns in Spanish have a gender.

la mesa (feminine) - the table

una mujer (feminine) - a woman

el libro (masculine) - the book

un hombre (masculine) - a man

Then when you use an adjective to describe a noun you must also adapt the adjective to fit the noun.

una mujer cansada (a tired woman)

un hombre cansado (a tired man)

una mujer contenta ( a happy woman)

un hombre contento (a happy man)

That covers gender but remember that nouns can also be plural and then you need to adapt the adjective not only for gender but also for number (singular or plural).

Las mujeres cansadas. (The tired women)

Los hombres cansados. (The tired men)
