estudio ( eh-stoo'-dyoh )

noun ( study, learning; studio )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. Susy is unable to continue with this task as she has other obligations that require her attention. In the meantime, please help one another out as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Jane Goodall ha dedicado su vida al estudio de los chimpancés.

Jane Goodall has dedicated her life to the study of chimpanzees.

2. Después del desastre de la última película, el estudio se declaró en bancarrota.

After the disaster of the last film, the studio declared bankruptcy.

¡Tienes que estudiar para aprender muchas cosas en la vida pero también tienes que practicar todo lo que has aprendido o si no, es probable que olvides mucho!

You have to study to learn many things in life but you must also put them into practice (apply them) otherwise it's likely that you will forget a lot /much of it !

Editor's note/s: I am not trying to imply that you have to (it's necessary) study to learn everything or every valuable skill in life, because there are some things you learn more often simply through life experience: like how to get on well with people, but regarding those things that require serious study to improve we have to keep putting what we have just learnt into practice so we don't forget it! This principle also applies to what we learn through life experience! wink

Señor Jubilado .. valer significa algo diferente que lo que quiso decir ud. .. puede utilizar el verbo valorar en su lugar ... - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014
y además de esto . la conjugación del verbo valer en futuro de indicativo es "valdrá" .. :) - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014

To add on, you can say sacar but not tomar in this case. Here is another scenario off of the top of my head: Voy a pedir un prestamo al banco. If I am telling someone that I am going to get a loan from the bank. - jphip, Aug 17, 2014

Hi Annie :) - Ella252, Aug 17, 2014
mhmm there is a wrong in that book, it can be "Juan es invitado o Juan está invitado" but 'Juan se invita' would be Juan is 'self-invited' - 003e54f5, Aug 17, 2014
Hello Ella, you are correct .. that way of saying it is also correct .. in spanish there are 2 ways of forming the passive voice .. the way you formed it is called "true passive" and the other one is "se passive" which I think is more commonly used among - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014
natives in many spanish speaking countries .. true passive is formed by using "ser" or "estar" plus the preposition por (if the agent is to be mentioned) and passi - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014
along with the past participle of the verb .. for example ,,, yo soy golpeado por Pablo todos los días) .. I am beaten by Pablo every day .. jeje .. - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014
now .. if you are using the "true passive voice" (which you did) you also need to ensure that you make the right choice between "ser" and "estar" .. for verbs indicating an action you would need to usd "ser" and for the ones reffering to state or conditio - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014
n use estar .. for example .. jimmy fue besado por una hada ( jimmy was kissed by a fairy) ..here we are talking about an action (kissing) so we will use ser .. but if I say ,, este libro estuvo escrito en español ... here we are talking about the state - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014
no Jimmy this isn't a competition, both we are learning and we can make mistakes, for this we are here I think jeje - 003e54f5, Aug 17, 2014
of being in Spanish writing .. so estar has been used .. .... I can also use se passive here and say .. se escribió este libro en español.. it is a little confusing and takes a little time to asimilate the Spanish passive constructions ... hehe - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014
but Pablo can help you better as I am not a native and can only give you my bookish knowledge hehe .. Go with Pablo's advice - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014
but in your example .. it would be better to say "juan es invitado" we are talking about an action in this case ,, so ser needs to be used ... The difference can be very subtle at times and difficult to make out so when in doubt just use ser ,, because m - 00b055e0, Aug 17, 2014

Pablo, I am surprised that estar is used with invitados, I always thought that ser was used to create the passive form: Juan es invitado al estudio etc....Why can estar be used here? Please tell me if you know the reason - FELIZ77, Aug 17, 2014

De joven tuve unas vacaciones maravillosas con veinte personas compartiendo una habitación muy básica pero ahora todo el mundo quiere un estudio de lujo con piscina y jacuzi.

When I was young i once had a marvellous holiday in a very basic room shared by 20 people, but these days everybody wants a small luxury apartment with swimmingpool and jaccuzzi.

El estudio de los ángulos de la cara humana es una habilidad más muy importante que debe dominarse por un retratista.

The study of the planes of the human face is a very important skill that must be mastered by a portrait painter.

Cuando era joven, me gustaba más la música grabada en un estudio, pero con el tiempo he aprendido a apreciar más la grabada en directo - no estoy seguro de si es porque mis gustos han madurado o porque los métodos de grabación han mejorado.

When I was young, I used to like music that was recorded in a studio more, but with time I have learned to appreciate more that recorded live- I am not sure whether this is because my tastes have matured or because the recording techniques have improved.

I would never say that I would qualify as a proper music fan, but as I have aged I have developed a better appreciation of the art. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 17, 2014
I am happy with recordings because I cannot always hear live music. :) - rac1, Aug 17, 2014
Oh, when I was young, I would listen to live music, but if it was a recording, I aways chose a studio album, not a live album, because I didn't like the imperfections. I have matured to be more tolerant of the organic nature of a live recording. ;) - bosquederoble, Aug 18, 2014
