intentar ( een-tehn-tahr' )

verb ( to attempt, to try )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. Susy is unable to continue with this task as she has other obligations that require her attention. In the meantime, please help one another out as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Estoy intentando aprender francés, pero es difícil.

I am trying to learn French, but it's hard.

2. Intenté llamarte, pero no contestaste tu teléfono.

I tried to call you, but you didn't answer your phone.

Nada se pierde con intentar.

There is no harm in trying.

No puedes ganar si no intentas algo.

You can't win if you don't try something.

I tried to convince my friend that carbs are much worse than fat, but he didn't believe me.

He intentado convencer a mi amigo que los carbohidratos son mucho peores que la grasa, pero no me creyó.

Hola Pablo, I didn't use ser as noun but as verb infinitive .. so no article was used ... ser humano (to be or being human) .. if I say el ser humano that would mean "human being" and would have changed the meaning .. hehe - 00b055e0, Aug 15, 2014
Hola Pablo, no utilicé la palabra "ser" como un sustantivo sino como un infinitivo del verbo "ser" .. quise decir "being human" no quise decir "human being" - 00b055e0, Aug 15, 2014
si perdon creo que lo hice por insticto "ser humano requiere..." sin "el" jeje - 003e54f5, Aug 15, 2014

Siempre intento comportarme bien, pero a veces, como soy ser humano, con todas las imperfecciones de un ser humano, digo algo que me arrepiento de haber dicho más tarde.

I always try to be well behaved, but at times, as I am human, with all the perfections of a human being, I say something that I regret having said later.

"Cuando" sólo lleva acento cuando es exclamativa e interrogativa, "distracciones" en plural es sin acento - Keirlen, Aug 15, 2014
Hahahahahaha - rac1, Aug 15, 2014
Thanks, Keirlen. I didn't realize there was a difference. :) - Findy, Aug 16, 2014
I think I understand: So it's cuando (at the time); cuándo (when?); and when you add on the es, the accent is no longer needed because it is already the second last syllable. :) - Findy, Aug 16, 2014
Emphasis is already on the second last syllable, I mean. :) - Findy, Aug 16, 2014

Creo que Pablo quería decir "voy a aprender". :) - bosquederoble, Aug 15, 2014
Well, "parace" is my bad spelling (wish I could blame it on SpellCheck, but not this time). I'm pretty sure that "aprende" for "aprender" is my keyboard's fault. Sometimes the letters don't print. Thanks, you guys. You're sweethearts. - AnnRon, Aug 15, 2014
gracias Bosque! si lo sé Ann sonó muy natural tu oración :) - 003e54f5, Aug 15, 2014

Ayer tuve que ir al médico e intentar explicarle que tengo una infección del tracto orinario en español. Fue un poco difícil porque me faltó el vocabulario de orina turbia.

Yesterday I had to go to the doctor's and try to expla

in to the doctor in Spanish, that I have a urinary tract infection. It was very hard because I didn't know how to say ' cloudy urine'.

UTIs can be very painful and horrible - 00b055e0, Aug 15, 2014
If you immediately start drinking cranberry juice, it helps bring relief! - Findy, Aug 15, 2014
It's not painful, itLs up in the kidneys or somewhere, and I've done 3 months on cranberries to no avail. I feel fine, but the problem persists! - annierats, Aug 16, 2014
Gracias Pablo! Ojala que puedas acomañarme el lunes cuando tengo que volver al médico... - annierats, Aug 16, 2014

Todos de nosotros en SpanishDict intentamos escribir sin errores, pero a veces esos errores suceden por sí mismos!

All of us on SpanishDict try to write without errors, but ¡ sometimes those errors just happen by themselves!

Questions: how do you say 'just' in this context, and also is this right for 'by themselves'? - jennysk, Aug 16, 2014
Also, how do you know where to put the first '¡'or '¿' when they are required? - jennysk, Aug 16, 2014
Where you think the questioning tone or the exlamation starts, it can be , as you've done it, later on in the sentence. I think you've written a good sentence. - annierats, Aug 16, 2014
Ah HA!! So the culprit isn't me - it's the words doing it all by themselves. hehe - Findy, Aug 16, 2014
Yep, I like that idea, Jenny. - rac1, Aug 16, 2014

El que intenta sabe lo que puede lograr y lo que es capaz de hacer por algo que quiere.

The one who tries knows what it needs to accomplish it and it's capable to reach his or her goals or needs.
