A short translation excercise for Spanish learners 2

Question

I was reading the news a few days ago and encountered an article about the "plaza de Mayo " activists in Argentina.

This brought to mind something I had written some time ago when studying the dictatorships of South America.

The phrase goes like this:

Los gobiernos posdictatoriales americanos mediante amnistias han tratado infructuosamente de eliminar de un brochazo la trágica memoria de las dictaduras que los antecedieron.

Since you natives already know this please let any of us learners see what we can do with this first.

The American post-dictatorial governments , through the use of amnesties, have fruitlessly tried to eliminate with a brushstroke the tragic memory of the dictatorships that preceded them.
