corriente ( koh-ree-ehn'-teh )

adjective ( current; common, ordinary )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. Susy is unable to continue with this task as she has other obligations that require her attention. In the meantime, please help one another out as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Para los hombres, tener barba y bigote es la moda corriente.

For men, having a beard and mustache is the current fashion.

2. Soy un tipo bastante corriente; no tengo nada de espectacular.

I'm a pretty ordinary guy; there's nothing spectacular about me.

Yo soy un hombre antecuado y no me caen bien las cosas y los estilos actuales/corrientes ,, pero mi leo es bastante moderno y le encanta toda la actualidad.

I am an old fashioned man and I don't like the current styles and things but my Leo is quite modern and he sure loves the entire modern zeitgeist Hehe

Nunca me ha gustado hacer lo que los demás hacían, y por eso a veces me ha sentido como un salmón luchando contra la corriente.

I have never liked doing what everyone else was doing, and because of this sometimes I have felt like a salmon struggling against the current.

Fueron arrastrados por la corriente.

They were swept away by the current.

Quita la corriente, no vaya a darte un calambrazo.

Switch off the current or you’ll get an electric shock.

I am looking for backup on this one from a native Mexican. Here "corriente" is used as somewhat more derrogatory than common, almost like trashy. To call someone "corriente" is a major insult.

Estoy buscando apoyo con esto de un hispanohablante del México. Aquí "xorriente" está usado como un insulto grave.

Yikes! Didn't know that. - rac1, Jul 27, 2014
"Gente corriente." Yes, in Mexico we say this to mean people of little breading. Your interpretation is correct, but I don´t think it is a "major" insult. More than anything, it denotes a lower class of people - 005faa61, Jul 27, 2014
Thanks Julian. I still don't think it is something you would call someone to their face. - gringojrf, Jul 28, 2014

A mi me gusta estar a LA corriente con las noticias del día aunque no me interesa la situación política.

I like to keep up with the daily news, even though I'm not that interested in politics.

Tenga cuidado al nadar en el océano, porque una corriente podría tirar de usted hacia el mar.

Use caution when swimming in the ocean because a current could pull you out to sea.

No creo en amor nada más porque amor me pone enfermo y me da un choque que sobrepase una carga eléctrica .. por lo tanto para mi, el amor es mas ariesgo y peligroso que nuestra palabra del día corriente .. jeje

enter image description here

I don't believe in love any more as love makes me sick and gives me a jolt/shock much stronger than an electric shock and thus for me love is more dangerous and risky than our word of the day (la corriente) .. haha

Jimmy, choque doesn't work, I had aghastly holiday experience with an electric cooker and the managemetn could not understand 'choque', they said ' salto electrico'. - annierats, Jul 26, 2014
:( .. sí .. - 00b055e0, Jul 26, 2014
Hi Annie .. nice to see you .. hehe .. but I did not use choqe to mean an electric shock but an impact in general (caused by love in this case) .. for electric shock I have used la descarga eléctrica .. thanks - 00b055e0, Jul 26, 2014
They understood my husband's miming, instantly. You need the article, EL amor, methinks. - annierats, Jul 26, 2014
Actually Annie, I am so hopeless about love that in my opinion true love doesn't exist (just a fiction) ,, so if I use the definite article El , that would kind of imply that I still believe in love .. so no article for amor from me .. - 00b055e0, Jul 26, 2014
see my logic ,, how very thoughtful of me .. hahahahahhahahahahaha ... - 00b055e0, Jul 26, 2014
Here in Mexico "choque" is a car accident. Maybe golpe? - gringojrf, Jul 26, 2014
In spain choque is also car crash, hence I said I had a carcrash in the kitchen and was not understood. - annierats, Jul 28, 2014

Hasta hace muy poco un cuarto de baño con agua corriente caliente y fría no era corriente en todos, pero un lujo para los pocos afortunados.

Up to very recently a bathroom with hot and cold running water was not usual at all but a luxury for the happy few.

Todos los modos corrientes van a pasar. Nada se queda igual. Esto es la única cosa de que podemos ser seguros.

All the current fashions are going to pass. Nothing stays the same. This is the only thing of which we can be sure.
