terrestre ( teh-reh'-streh )

adjective ( land, earthly, terrestrial )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. Susy is unable to continue with this task as she has other obligations that require her attention. In the meantime, please help one another out as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. El elefante africano de sabana es el animal terrestre más grande del mundo.

The African bush elephant is the largest land animal in the world.

2. La película trataba de un asteroide que completamente destruye toda la vida terrestre.

The movie was about an asteroid that completely destroys all life on earth.

@pablo064....yes, after the eruption of mt. St. Helens in 1980, scientists came up with the idea of blowking the toxic bird poop (using windmills) over to Russia but their windmills were no match for the prevailing westerlies. - 007c5fc1, Jul 20, 2014

Creo que debo ...(creo que + indicative! no creo que + subjunctive) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2014
kiwi, with deber, poder and querer we can use the imperfect subjumctive and conditional to make the sentence more polite and courteous ,, and these three verbs are an exception, atleast this is what I have read .. for - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014
example : quisiera hablar con mi amiga Annie .. here logically there is no need for subjunctive but is still used so it doesn't seem overbaring or rude ... my native friend from venezuela also uses subjumctive with deber a lot ... what do you think ?? - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014
@Findy : Yes my friend, he is a cute and adorable Dog , I did post a picture of him once before too and you can also look at my profile pic .. that is Leo .. will post another one soon .. hehe - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014

air.. from a satellite ;) - 003e54f5, Jul 20, 2014
haha .. not Air Pablo, it is actually electro magnetic waves broadcasted from TV stations and relayed through satellites .. Air has no role to play .. E - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014
EM waves propagate on their own and don't need air .. even if you put your TV or your cell phone in a vacum ,, they will still work .. hehe - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014

A unas personas les gusta vivir con la cabeza en las nubes, y no les gusta tener que volver a la realidad de la vida terrestre.

Some people like to live with their heads in the clouds, and they don't like having to return to the reality of earthly life.

very true - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014
I would say 'con la cabeza' - when referring to a body part that people only have one of you often keep it singular even when more than one person is involved :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2014
But do see what a native speaker says :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2014

I notice some people are using terrestre as a noun rather than an adjective. Can it be both? - jennysk, Jul 21, 2014
Yes, it can. :) - rac1, Jul 21, 2014
Todavía me gusta escuchar ... (No 'a') ;) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 21, 2014
Findy and Annie : Well yes it can be used as a noun (actually an adjective used in nominative case representing the noun) but not meaning land ... if I use terrestre as a noun in would mean land dweller .. for example soy un terrestre porque pertenezco - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014
a la tierra.. I am a terrestrial being (one who lives on land) because I belong to the land .. ... if you want to say land .. you can't use terrestre in that sense .. u need to use la tierra (earth, soil, land) or el terreno (terrain, land) .. hehe - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014
or Kiwi may be able to, suggest some better vocabulary .. - 00b055e0, Jul 21, 2014
Thank you, everyone! That all makes sense. I'll switch those around and use tierra (makes sense!), although now I need a new sentence to use terrestre. lol - Findy, Jul 21, 2014
