This was bugging me because I've heard the explanation before, I just couldn't remember, so I did a little research. Here's what I found.

Saber es un verbo transitivo, por lo que la presencia del pronombre de objeto directo es fácil de entender.

Saber is a transitive verb that takes a direct object...

These are good examples, taken from here

"No lo sé" se usa cuando se habla de un objeto masculino en particular:

Q: ¿Sabes el significado de este símbolo? / ¿Sabes el resultado del juego? A: No, No lo sé.

Q: ¿Sabes la respuesta de esta pregunta? / ¿Sabes la clave de la cuenta? A: No, No la sé.

Q: ¿Sabes qué significa este símbolo? / ¿Sabes cómo se juega? A: No, No sé qué significa. A: No, No sé cómo se juega.

Grammar aside, both translate to I don't know.

As 1rajaji said there is a difference.

Do you want to go to the movies? No sé, déjame pensar un rato. = I don't know, let me think about it.

Did you know that he told her? No lo sé. = I didn't know it.

It's about understanding the difference, and for that you need to know the meaning.

  1. No sé and yo no sé mean I don't know.
  2. No lo sé means I don't know it.

You would use Number 1 in general, but if you want to stress the "it" that's when you would use Number 2.

None, from an everyday usage perspective.

I think the grammatically correct version is "No lo se", but you'll see and hear both.
