"Alegre" is the adjective you're thinking of. In case you didn't quite understand what GexThunderstorm said, he meant that "me" is a pronoun that refers to oneself.

As Julian already noted, "me" is reflexive. I like to think of it as analogous to "myself" in English. It's like you're saying that something inside you is becoming joyful…It's a little hard to explain in a way that makes sense in terms of English, but you know how you say that you "dress yourself" or I "feed myself" or something like that? That's how the pronoun "me" works. It just indicates that the subject and the object of the verb are the same; in other words, that you are doing something to yourself, or that it is happening within you without any outside influences or actors.

So, "me alegro" means "I feel happy" without pointing to a cause necessarily. Notice how "alegro" is conjugated in the first-person "yo" form. This means the subject "yo" and the object "me" are the same person.

In Julian's second example, "me alegra" is conjugated in the third person, pointing to some outside force that is causing you to be happy. Thus, the "me" is no longer reflexive, since the subject and object of the verb are different.

Hope this helps clear things up for you!

I thought 'alegro' is similiar to 'feliz', so i thought the sentence pattern of saying 'i am happy' would be the same (i.e estoy feliz...estoy alegro). - Iamaspanishlover, Jul 8, 2014
So...can i say that 'alegro' has the meaning of 'making someone feel happy'? - Iamaspanishlover, Jul 8, 2014

And 'alegro' is años adjective

I don´t understand this.

Alegro as an adverb or noun refers to a musical piece or the tempo of a piece of music.

Me alegro means "I am glad / happy". The personal pronoun me indicates reflexive usage with a nuance of " feel / become happy".

Me alegra indicates that some thing makes me happy, ie: Tu presencia me algera mucho .... Your presence makes me very happy.

Alegro no es adjetivo de años.

Me es como un pronombre en el cual se refiere a uno mismo.

Tell me- Decirme

Estoy alegro es una forma incorrecta de decirlo, la forma correcta es Estoy alegre.

Lo siento pero no sé como explicarte bien.
