To play chess in Spanish

Question

When saying "I play chess." Would you use the "a" after jugar? Which one is correct?

Juego al ajedrez.

       OR

Juego ajedrez.

Straight from the translator (dictionary)

jugar al ajedrez/a las cartas - to play chess/cards

So I would say "jugar a" is correct.
