ser un chorizo

Question

¡Hola! Por lo que sé la expresión ser un chorizo significa ser un ladrón. Quiero preguntar si se refiere a un carterista o más bien a una persona que fractura casas ¿o tal vez se puede usar en cualquier contexto?

Para mí el sentido siempre ha sido lo de un ratero cualquiera o sea, desde el carterista hasta el político corrupto y todo lo de en medio.

I was listening to a podcast yesterday where they talked about this. (Notes in spanish, beginners, the "ser o estar" episode.)They explained it as being anything from someone being a bit cheeky (like your boyfriend taking some money from your purse) or a pickpocket or someone who shoplifts - but not an armed robber.
