Use of "a" versus "que" before a verb

Question

When is "a" used and when is "que" used prior to a verb in a sentence? It seems like they show up randomly before a verb such as when you say something like: I want to go to the store; or .... I can see the bird; or .... I have to eat at the restaurant.

I want to go to the store. -> Quiero ir a la tienda.

I can see the bird. -> Puedo ver el pájaro.

I have to eat at the restaurant. Tengo que comer en el restaurante.

So just where are these misterious "a"s? The only "a" I see is part of the standard "Ir a" construction.

Please post your versions that contain the "a"s of which you refer.

When necessary.

Try posting a few examples that have you confused. I'm sure someone would be willing to help you dissect them and sift through the content that has you so puzzled.
