El calor is a noun which means heat .. example .. hay mucho calor cerca de la estufa .. there is a lot of heat around/close to the gas stove..
caliente is an adjective which is used along with other nouns to indicate that some thing (noun) is warm or hot .. for example .. el sartén está caliente ahora, pudieras echar el aceite .. the frying pan is hot now ,, you may add the oil ..
here is a bonus word for you (gift from me) .. calentar .. which is a verb and means to heat some thing .. for example .. caliente ud. el agua antes de ducharte .. heat the water before you take a shower.
Now all three words used together in a single sentence so you understand better ..
El calor de sol calienta el agua del tanque sobre el tejado y por eso hay agua claiente en el grifo por la tarde .. The heat of the sun heats up the water of the tank over the roof and that is why we have hot water in the tap/faucet in the afternoon.
Hope it helps .. regards ..
This is a common mistake to say "caliente" for "calor" or viceversa. My students say this all the time "Estoy caliente" instead of "Tengo calor" I like the explanation from jimmy1978, very accurate.
Be wary.
'' Hace calor'' is fine. Hot weather.
''Estoy caliente'' could be taken to mean you're on heat..
