Welcome to the Forum!

When asking or answering questions, please use correct punctuation and grammar.

When you are talking about age, you don't talk the same way that you do in English. In English, you would use the words I am..., but in Spanish you use I have...

The correct way to say this is Yo tengo...anos. If you are 14, then you would use catorce. So you would say Yo tengo catorce anos.

Hope this helps!

¿No sería menos problemático tener sólo un ano y tener catorce años? - 005faa61, Jun 1, 2014
If I cannot add a tilde on an n I put ny - otherwise ano is a problem jeje - Mardle, Jun 1, 2014
@JulianChivi - What do you mean? - 00ffada9, Jun 2, 2014
HCA Julian is showing a delicously dry sense of humour and giving a lesson in punctuation - look up 'ano' - Mardle, Jun 3, 2014
Hca, Julian has written : "Would it not be less problematic to have only I anus (año lacks accent!) and to be 14 years old? - FELIZ77, Jun 3, 2014
good answer - 00b055e0, Jun 3, 2014

Hi Kevin - where are you based? Have you just started learning Spanish? I was taught how to say my name and age in the first weeks. As others have mentioned, Spanish like French uses the verb tener [avoir] when mentioning age [and hunger, thirst etc]. There is a translator and a conjugator on this site which is perfect for straightforward sentences. I note you asked about using the phrase in a letter. If it is informal to a friend you can write the number 14 rather than fourteen [catorce] but I am puzzled how you intend to write the rest of your letter .. Do complete some of your profile eg language level as it helps us help you.

Hi, welcome to the forum. When you write things like this, it has to be referring to you, so you have to use the part of the noun in the first person. It is a bit like in French If you write "j'ai 14 ans" it is correct in the language, but means I have 14 years. It is the same in Spanish, you say tengo (i have) 14 años (14 years) Hope this helped you to understand the way the Spanish write things. xxxx
