Stop putting pressure on yourself to "learn," and just use what you have learned to this point as an entry point to "experience" the world from a different perspective. Find a subject you are interested in, and read about it in Spanish, or even better, listen to Spanish radio or watch Spanish TV that is appealing to you.
Just keep it light, and keep it simple.
I've taken time off from languages and come back to them (and for much more than a week) as my interest has waxed or waned. The key is to keep it relevant and then the language just becomes a window that allows you to peak at the world through a new set of eyes. Don't make it a chore by putting undue pressure on yourself to learn a certain amount in a certain time frame. Keep it enjoyable and it will be more sustainable. Remember that you will never stop learning new things about language, even if you become "fluent" (and this includes your native tongue), so try not to look for an "end point," but instead, just enjoy the journey.
Best of luck
Can you remember what motivated you to start learning Spanish in the first place?
Ths could help you regain your first love for the subject! ![]()
Besides, be gentle on yourself because enjoyment is a big part of learning and without it most of us wouuld also lose our motivation to keep going
Relax and take one step at a time do whatever it takes for you to enjoy doing Spanish again
play a game,
watch a film in Spanish with English subtitles
I am sure you could come up with even better ideas ![]()
Finally, make sure you get plenty of sleep because lack of sleep can affect motivation in all/almost all areas of life! I talk from direct experience! ![]()
I hope this helps ![]()
Hi RunALot, Please complete your profile. It's important to know your language of study. I would suggest just begin where you left off and not to dwell on disappointments or setbacks.
Just try and learn something each day and don't worry about the time issue. I think you do want to learn and you will. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Dear RunALot,
I am almost right where you are.Push through .Keep on pushing. I've got little else except you should put a comment to my post to tell me .Keep going .This has happened to me many times. It will happen again. With encouragement and knowing others share your struggle we get through.May the force be with you.
Just look for stuff to translate to English that you know it is going to be fun to learn or know about.
Translate to English a nice novel that will keep you interested no matter what.
I say English because i don;t know what's your native language.
Are you speaking Spanish on a regular basis? If you're not, stop studying Spanish and start speaking it.
Make friends with Spanish speakers and hang out, watch movies in Spanish, chat/text with people in Spanish, whatever. Start putting all the hard work you've done to use. You can't study something forever without having a practical use for it.
I don't know where you live, but hopefully you've got Spanish speakers around to interact with.
Welcome to SD, RunALot. Cute name. Filling out your profile also helps us to know what is your native language as well as what level you consider yourself at on the one you're learning. We all need to take a break now and then or we'll end up like this:
Maybe you just need to do some fun learning - join in some games here. I know when I just get tired of plain old learning, it's nice to just get in there and have fun. Five years!! That's great! You probably know more than you think you know. You can probably even give those of us a hand who are still struggling in the beginners section.
Good luck on getting your mojo back!

If you have stopped enjoying learning spanish, take a break. Sooner or later you will miss it and want to return with renewed vigour. Also take a minute to congratulate yourself on your progress and dedication so far. Five years at it is an awesome amount of effort! Focus on what you have already achieved instead of being daunted by what you have yet to learn. There is no end point in learning a language so perhaps set yourself achievable goals like booking and attending a language course abroad, or committing to skype lessons once a week, or finding a native speaker to practice on! Hope you find your mojo soon!
