Coincidence that the word reminds me of "witch"?

Well, it's an exact translation. A golden compass= una brújula dorada.

If the compass got it's name because it's ability to find North seemed magic, that I don't know. The Golden Compass ( La Brújula Dorada) is a fairly recent film, based on Philip Pullman's Northern Lights. Iit figures a magic instrument, the Altiometer, which can give advice, if you can read it.

Well, that's really not at all surprising considering that one of the words for witch is una bruja

The word is used in the title of one of C.S. Lewis's most famous stories written for children

The Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe = El león, la bruja y el armario

Perhaps, in the story, the Golden Compass was created through some spell/form of sorcery?
