ala ( ah'-lah )

noun ( wing; branch (of a political party) )

Sylyon1976 will correct the Spanish sentences as her time permits. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

enter image description here

Example:

1. El colibrí amatista puede agitar las alas hasta ochenta veces por segundo.

The Amethyst Woodstar hummingbird can beat its wings up to 80 times per second.

2. Al ala más liberal del partido no le gustó la última versión del proyecto de ley.

The more liberal wing of the party didn't like the latest version of the bill.

3. No podemos esconder la cabeza bajo el ala y fingir que este problema no existe.

We cannot bury our heads in the sand and pretend that this problem does not exist.

Notes:

"Ala" is a feminine noun, but in the singular, it takes the masculine article "el" so that the "a" in "la" and the first "a" in "ala" don't blend into each other.

To prevent errors, everyone please note that although ala is feminine, it takes the masculine article in the singular for reasons of sound. Adjectives remain feminine. Just like agua. "El ala", "las alas". - bosquederoble, May 25, 2014
