Help with "¿Por qué quiero aprender inglés?"

I'm new here and just need help with a simple question.
Whilst talking to a Spanish language exchange partner, I asked him, "¿Por qué te aprendes inglés?" meaning 'why do you learn English?' (or in more words, 'why do you want to learn English?') He corrected me with "¿Por qué quiero aprender inglés? " However, I was under the impression that 'quiero' would be referring to myself, thus 'Why do I want to learn English?' so it didn't really make sense to me.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me? It'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

He was talking about himself to correct you- well, a correction/ the way he understands and speaks. Por qué te aprendes íngles sounds odd but is understood.
You should have said ¿Por qué quiere(s) aprender español?
I agree with Jp. I believe that he was trying to correct you by ascertaining what you were trying to say. It was his way of saying Is this what you really want to know?
He corrected me with "¿Por qué quiero aprender inglés?
As if to say, is this the question you want me to answer: Why do I want to learn English?
He could alternatively have said: we say it like this: ¿Por qué quieres aprender inglés? = Why do you want to learn English?
Obviously you would phrase the question correctly like this if you were asking him: ¿Por qué quieres aprender inglés? = Why do you want to learn English? He wasn't so much answering your question as...
