"route" as meaning "way"?

Let's say you get in a cab and you want to tell the cab driver which route you wish to take. How would you say," the best route to take is..." Could "ruta" work? "Recorrido"?

Vamos por la carretera 1 hasta Todos Santos y después por carretera 17.
