Great ebook Kiwi, thanks for sharing .. A nice cocktail of possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns .. helped me revise ..
But Kiwi, I have a little question (after reading that e-book) .. there is a sentence on the very first slide/page "a quien le pertence" .. now I have seen le being used for the first time in such a sentence .. and I am not sure if it is actually required let me try to answer my own question and please tell me if I am right or wrong .. hehe .. pertenecer is an intransitive verb and doesn't take a direct object and the object the possession is attributed to is thus an indirect object so we need to use the i so we need to use the indirect object pronoun .. like .. este libro le pertence a Kiwi (so Kiwi becomes an indirect object in this sentence) .. am I correct Kiwi ?
but if so .. I am not sure why le/les have not been used in any of the sentence examples for pertenecer on SD .. :( - jimmy1978 20 de May, 2014 flag and Kiwi .. I used to say .. Loncha de quezo .. but I learned that new word trozo in your ebook .. so thanks - jimmy1978 20 de May, 2014 flag Can you give me an example Jimmy of what you've seen on SD regarding pertenecer? - Kiwi-Girl 20 de May, 2014 borrar | flag Btw your comments are correct, kiwi wd be the indirect object in your example. - Kiwi-Girl 20 de May, 2014 borrar | flag Yeaaaaaa .. Thank you Kiwi .. See .. I may be a beginner but I am smart beginner .. hehe ..
- OK .. here is an example I am copying and pasting from SD dictionary section : pertenecemos a un grupo pacifista - so if we go as per the instransitive verb logic as we discussed above .. should we not rather be saying this as : le pertenecemos a un grupo pacifista - we belong to a pacifist group (where the group is the indirect Object so le should be used as per the logic we discussed above)..
The short answer is that sometimes the i.o.p. is required, and sometimes it is optional depending on where it goes in the sentence and what role it plays.
In my case the i.o. preceded the verb so the i.o.p. was mandatory.
For your example the i.o. followed the verb so the i.o.p. was optional.
I hope that helps ![]()
