"Bump into someone" or "run into someone"
How would I describe a situation where, for example, I am strolling along the street and unexpectedly run into a friend? Do I just use ... "cuando de repente me encontré con alguien"- or is there a particular expression that is used in Mexico?

En México es muy común decir: Toparse con alguien.
The colloquial way is with the verb tropezar.
Otra forma de decir lo que quieres decir en español: Yo estaba en el super y di con mi amigo.
Use of an adverbial phrase, as you have done, can add the flavor you are looking for
...de repente me encontré con alguien
...por casualidad me encontré con alguien.
Other verbs might be used as well, of course, such as tropezarse, toparse or hallar.
You can also use the verbal construction: **encontrarse con alguien (par casualidad) ** = to bump into someone (by chance) (ie: a chance encounter)
eg: Se encontró por casualidad con su amiga Sara en la plaza mayor. = By chance, he bumped into his friend Sarah in the main square.
El sábado nos encontramos con Bob en el supermercado.= Last saturday we 'bumped into' Bob in the supermarket.
I hope this helps ![]()
