I hope to have a Spanish dictionary that explains in English. I'm used to looking dictionary up in paper edition. Thank you very much.

I have many but my favorite paperback is**...

Larousse Concise Spanish-English/English-Spanish Dictionary**.

It has over 120,000 translations. 90,000 references, Latin-American coverage and lots of idioms, for example the word "Dar" is over half a page long because under the word it gives lot's of idioms. It's a bit clunky perhaps 2 1/2 inches thick, but still small enough to be portable perhaps 5x7 in page size. I like to keep it in my car or with me at all times and keep it in a 1/2 gallon freezer bag to protect it a little.

I haven't reached the stage yet but am hoping to one day be ready for a Spanish Dictionary with Spanish definitions. Any suggestions?

The rae. Sorry, the site will not allow me to put it into capitals. Real Academia Española, diccionario de la lengua. - annierats, May 15, 2014
Correct, but the rae does not explain in English. (bilingual) ;-) - chileno, May 15, 2014

I have a Spanish Collins Easy Learning dictionary which is big enough to be useful, but not too big to carry round or to class. Some years ago I bought the Oxford dictionary referred to by Feliz - it is big and heavy - but has a large number of words and in the middle tips on letter writing and other things. I realise you are undertaking the difficult task of improving two languages at once. I check words on the word reference site online. It has two dictionary entries the first the Oxford and the second on many words the Collins - online, Collins is better on idioms. I am happy with the two I have, but I do not know about the American options. Both dictionaries have references to Spanish from Spain and Latin America. As I bought the very large Oxford Dictionary I have not looked at the very large Collins one, so I cannot say if you would prefer the large Collins to the Oxford.

I have amedium sized poccket Oxford Spanish/Englsish as well, but I find the large paperback Collins worth the weight. The medium sized Collins for travel is a good option . - annierats, May 16, 2014

I have the Collins Dictionary and I find it very useful. As well as the translations it has a section on grammar and the conjugations of verbs, regular and irregular, at the back.

Thisis a paper dicitionary.Printed matter, but it also exists on the internet. - annierats, May 15, 2014
Although a paper back it is heavy. However, whenI have left it at home I have always regretted it bitterly. There are pocket sized versions but they are not as good. - annierats, May 16, 2014

Thank you all of you for sharing your using experiences in paperback dictionary. I love paperback form whatever books, magazines or dictionaries.
My eyes can't watch the computer screen too long.
Internet is convenient but not good enough for my eyes.

Hello Tung

If you are looking for an excellent, offline, Spanish Dictionary, I can recommend:

(the) Oxford Spanish Dictionary (4th edn)

They use a unique tracker system whereby native speakers track the most up to date new and regurlarly used words, colloquial and idiomatic expressions and offer special features like how to write letters (both personal and businesss) and make telephone calls in Spanish.

You can but this dictionary more cheaply online through Amazon...here is the link! enter link description here

... at a cost of only £21 compared with £35/36 in the shops) I obtain no benefits: fnancial or otherwise, from recommending any purchse through Amazon, as a regular customer, it just saves people like you money...that's my only motive! wink smile

You might just find this dictionary abit too detailed for a beginner but it does show the different contexts clearly so that you (a student/user) can know how the meaning of the word changes according to the context, and thereforw which word/verb you will need! smile
